Audi A5 (F5): Replacing the Front Left Exterior Door Handle

The exterior front door handle on the Audi A5 F5 (2017-2024) is replaced without removing the door panel. The mounting hardware is accessed from the edge of the open door. The procedure requires care when disconnecting the keyless entry sensor connector, if the car is equipped with that option.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 6 Tools: Torx T20 screwdriver, plastic pry tool (optional)

Step by step

6 steps
  1. Open the front left door. On the door edge, at handle level, find the rubber cap (a round plug). Pry it out with a plastic pry tool or a screwdriver and remove it.
  2. Under the cap is a Torx T20 screw. Turn it counterclockwise until it stops, but do NOT unscrew it completely. The screw has a retainer and will not fall out.
  3. After loosening the screw, press the screw head inward into the door. This releases the lock cylinder (on the driver's door) or the decorative cap (on the passenger door). Slide the cylinder/cap outward and remove it.
  4. Now grab the exterior handle and slide it rearward (toward the back of the car) about 1-2 cm, then pull the handle outward at an angle. The handle will come out of the guides.
  5. Behind the handle is the electrical connector for the keyless entry sensor (if equipped). Press the connector lock and disconnect it by pulling it toward you. If the car has no keyless entry, there will be no connector.
  6. Install the new handle in reverse order: connect the connector, insert the handle into the guides at an angle, and slide it forward until it locks. Insert the cylinder/cap, tighten the Torx T20 screw to 3-5 N·m (2-4 lb-ft). Control the force by hand and do not overtighten. Then install the rubber cap.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not pull the handle outward before sliding it rearward, or you may break the plastic tabs. The keyless sensor connector is fragile. Do not pull on the wires, only on the connector body. When buying a used handle, check that the sensor is intact and that the housing has no cracks, because replacing the sensor separately is expensive.
