Chery Fora (A21): Diagnosing a Front Suspension Knock

A knock in the front suspension of the Chery Fora is most often caused by worn sway bar links, ball joints, or control arm bushings. The MacPherson strut suspension with lower control arms and a sway bar requires systematic diagnosis to identify the worn component.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 8 Tools: Inspection pit or lift, pry bar, jack, lug wrench, 17 mm and 19 mm wrenches, flashlight

Part

  • 🔩 Typical candidates: sway bar links A21-2906025-01, ball joints A21-2909060, front control arms A21-2909020 (right) and A21-2909010 (left), wheel bearings A21-3001030, control arm bushings, sway bar bushings A21-2906025

Step by step

8 steps
  1. Park the car on a level surface and lift the front wheels with jacks or a lift. Make sure it is safe to work under the vehicle.
  2. Check the sway bar links. Grab each link by hand and move it up and down. Play or free movement indicates worn bushings or damaged rubber elements. This is the most common cause of knocking over bumps.
  3. Inspect the ball joints. Insert a pry bar between the lower control arm and the steering knuckle and lift. Noticeable play or a clunk indicates a worn ball joint. Also check the ball joint boots for tears.
  4. Check the front control arm bushings. Visually assess the condition of the rubber bushings where the arms attach to the subframe. Cracks, separation, or rubber squeezing out of its seat mean replacement is needed.
  5. Check the wheel bearings. Rock the raised wheel in both the vertical and horizontal planes. Play in the vertical plane may indicate a worn wheel bearing or ball joint (confirm with the pry bar). A humming noise when the wheel spins is a clear sign of a bad bearing.
  6. Inspect the strut top mount bearings. Push down on the fender several times. A dull knock from above during rebound may indicate a worn top mount bearing or a worn strut bump stop.
  7. Check fastener tightness. Make sure the ball joint nuts, control arm mounting bolts, and sway bar link nuts are tight. Loose fasteners can be the source of the knock.
  8. Lower the car and take a test drive over uneven road surfaces. Pay attention to the character of the knock (frequent, light knocking: sway bar links; dull, occasional knocking: ball joints or bushings; humming: bearing).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Worn ball joints are a serious hazard, since a failure can cause loss of steering control. If you find play in a ball joint, replace it immediately. CTR CBM36 ball joints or original Chery A21-2909060 are recommended. They show a service life of about 2 years under heavy use. Control arm bushings and sway bar bushings can be replaced with polyurethane ones for longer service life.
