Engine Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

An oil pan leak on the 1.7 8V usually comes from the gasket shrinking and aging or from a deformed pan flange. The job is not difficult, but there is little room under the engine, and the pan has to be lowered and removed between the suspension components. The key points during assembly are clean, flat mating surfaces and even bolt tightening without overtightening.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 2-4 hours Steps: 12 Tools: Pit or vehicle ramps, 8, 10, 13 and 17 mm wrenches and sockets, ratchet with extension, torque wrench, oil drain pan of at least 5 L (5.3 qt), scraper (plastic or brass), degreaser, shop rags, jack and jack stands, and if needed a lift or an engine support.

Part

  • 🔩 Engine oil pan gasket for the VAZ-2123 (Chevrolet Niva) 1.7 8V. Related items: engine oil meeting the manufacturer's specification (about 3.5 L (3.7 qt), always confirm the final level with the dipstick), oil filter, drain plug gasket or washer, and oil- and fuel-resistant sealant if needed

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, pit or ramps, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. The engine should be warm, but not hot.
  2. Remove the engine skid plate (underbody shield) if one is fitted. Unscrew the oil filler cap and drain the oil through the drain plug in the pan. Let it drain for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Check how much access you have to the pan. On the Niva, the pan can interfere with the front suspension components and the front differential housing. If the pan will not lower or come out, support the engine from below with a stand or raise it slightly after loosening the nuts on the front engine mounts. Do not work under an engine that is held only by a jack.
  4. Remove all the pan mounting bolts, alternating sides around the perimeter. Remember which bolt came from where, since the lengths may differ. If brackets or studs are attached to the pan, remove them too.
  5. If the pan is stuck to the block, carefully break it loose by prying with a plastic or wooden wedge in several places. Do not pry with a screwdriver into the flange surface, to avoid deforming it.
  6. Lower the pan and take it out from under the engine. There will still be oil in it, so pour it out carefully. Inspect the pan for cracks, dents, and metal shavings in the oil.
  7. Clean the mating surfaces of the block and the pan of gasket and sealant residue with a scraper, then degrease them. Check that the pan flange is flat: if there are dents around the bolt holes, straighten them on a flat plate with a hammer or replace the pan. If needed, rinse the pan and wipe off the oil pump pickup (oil intake screen).
  8. Install the new gasket. If the gasket is rubber or cork, secure it to the flange with a small amount of sealant at the corners and joints. Do not apply too much sealant, since the excess ends up in the oil. Treat the joints between the front cover of the block and the rear crankshaft seal with a thin layer of sealant.
  9. Lift the pan into place, insert the bolts, and first thread them in by hand. Then tighten them in a criss-cross pattern in two or three passes without overtightening: the pan bolts are small and the torque is low (roughly 5-10 N·m (4-7 lb-ft); check the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications). Overtightening crushes the flange and causes a new leak.
  10. Install the drain plug with a new washer, and reinstall the engine mounts and any removed parts. Replace the oil filter and fill with fresh oil up to the mark on the dipstick. If sealant was used, wait 1-2 hours for it to cure fully.
  11. Reconnect the battery, start the engine for 1-2 minutes, and check for leaks around the pan perimeter and for oil pressure (the warning light should go out). Shut the engine off, wait a few minutes, and check the level on the dipstick, topping up if necessary.
  12. After a day, check that the pan is dry. Then, after a short drive, check the oil level and the bolt tightness.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not work under an engine that is supported only by a jack. Use stands and supports. Do not overtighten the pan bolts and do not use excess sealant. The exact procedure for removing the pan on the VAZ-2123 (whether the mounts need to be loosened or the crossmember lowered, and by how much) depends on trim level and suspension condition, so work as the situation requires and do not use force if the pan binds.
