Fiat Ducato (3rd generation, 250/290): Left Front Headlight Assembly Replacement

The Ducato headlight is secured to the front body panel with several bolts or screws. The fasteners become accessible after removing the radiator grille or the upper trim panel. The job is not difficult, but the removal order depends on the trim level. The exact sequence and number of fasteners for your version may differ, so the general procedure is described below.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-60 minutes Steps: 13 Tools: PH2 Phillips screwdriver, socket set and ratchet (8-13 mm), plastic pry tool or clip removal tool, Torx key (if the fasteners require it), gloves

Part

  • 🔩 Left headlight assembly (for non-LED Ducato 2014+ versions, OE part numbers 1374294080 and 1374298080 are found, but which one is left and which is right must be verified in the catalog for your trim: with or without fog lights, with or without a leveling adjuster). Aftermarket alternatives: TYC, Depo, Hella

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Turn off the engine, the lights and the ignition. As a precaution, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 2-3 minutes.
  2. Open the hood and secure it with the factory prop rod.
  3. Remove the radiator grille and the upper trim panel. They are usually held by several screws at the top and plastic clips. Remove the screws and carefully release the clips with a pry tool.
  4. If the turn signal, side repeater or air duct is in the way, remove it or move it aside. On some versions they are mounted separately from the headlight.
  5. Disconnect the connectors on the back of the headlight: the main lighting connector, the turn signal connector and, if equipped, the electric leveling motor connector. Slide the locking tab or press the latch on the connector and pull on the connector body, not the wire.
  6. Remove the headlight mounting screws or bolts, usually two or three. Hold the headlight by hand so it does not fall out.
  7. Carefully pull the headlight forward and outward and remove it. If it sits on locating pins, move it straight, without tilting.
  8. Transfer the bulbs and dust covers to the new headlight if they are not included. Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with your fingers.
  9. Set the new headlight onto the locating pins and tighten the fasteners moderately, without overtightening, so you do not crack the plastic mounting tabs. A torque specification is not published in open sources; snug tightening with a screwdriver or ratchet, without jerking, is sufficient.
  10. Reconnect the connectors, seating each in its place until it clicks.
  11. Reconnect the battery terminal and check the low beam, high beam, parking light, turn signal and fog light, if equipped.
  12. Reinstall the trim panel and grille, and check that the gaps between the headlight, hood and bumper are even.
  13. Adjust the beam aim on an alignment screen or against a wall on level ground. If the vehicle has an electric leveling adjuster, set it to the zero position.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Before buying, verify the headlight type: with or without fog lights, with a manual or electric leveling adjuster, halogen or LED. Headlights for different versions have different connectors and mounts. Do not use heavy force on the plastic clips: they become brittle and break in cold weather, so it is best to have spares. On LED versions, do not open the control unit or touch the modules unless necessary. If a lighting fault warning appears after replacement, check that the connectors are fully seated.
