Honda StepWGN (4th generation, RK): Parking Brake Shoe Replacement
The 4th-generation Honda StepWGN (RK) uses a drum-type parking brake integrated into the rear disc brakes. The parking brake shoes sit inside the hat of the rotor and press against the inner surface of the drum portion of the rotor. Replacement requires removing the rear caliper and rotor, working with several springs, and adjusting the shoe clearance after installation.
Part
- 🔩 Parking brake shoes (confirm the exact OE number with a Honda dealer for the RK with the R20A engine; the 43154-xxx-xxx series numbers are used on Honda, but the JDM StepWGN version may differ from North American models)
Step by step
16 steps- Raise the rear of the vehicle with a jack and support it on secure jack stands. Remove the rear wheel. Make sure the parking brake lever is fully released.
- Remove the two rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Hang the caliper from the suspension with wire. Do not let it hang by the brake hose.
- Remove the brake rotor from the hub. If the rotor will not come off, thread two M8 bolts, 20-25 mm long, into the threaded holes in the rotor (alternating 2 turns on each) to push it off. If the parking brake shoes are worn unevenly, the rotor may jam. In that case, back off the shoes through the access hole in the rotor (turn the adjuster star wheel counterclockwise to retract the shoes).
- Before disassembly, take photos of the spring and component layout. This makes reassembly easier. Remove the upper return spring with pliers (it connects the upper ends of both shoes).
- Remove the two shoe hold-down pins: press down on the spring cup and turn the pin 90 degrees, then pull the pin out of the hole in the backing plate.
- Disconnect the self-adjuster spring (the thin spring between the shoe and the adjuster lever) and remove the self-adjuster lever from the rear shoe.
- Remove the lower return spring and the adjuster strut (adjuster) between the lower ends of the shoes. Note the adjuster orientation: the threaded part must point toward the front of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuator lever on the rear shoe (press the spring clip and release the cable end from its seat).
- Remove both shoes. Transfer the parking brake actuator lever from the old rear shoe to the new one (remove the retaining washer or drive out the retaining pin, depending on the design).
- Clean the backing plate of dust and rust with a wire brush. Apply a thin layer of high-temperature grease to the backing plate contact pads (the 6 points where the shoes rest on the plate), and to the threads and surfaces of the adjuster strut. Do NOT let grease get on the friction surface of the shoes.
- Install the new shoes in reverse order: first the rear shoe with the parking brake lever, connect the cable, then the front shoe. Install the hold-down pins with their springs.
- Install the adjuster strut between the lower ends of the shoes. Before installing, fully collapse the adjuster (thread it in to the minimum length).
- Install the self-adjuster spring and the self-adjuster lever on the rear shoe. Install the lower and upper return springs. Check that all parts are installed symmetrically and the springs are tensioned.
- Install the brake rotor on the hub. Adjust the shoe clearance: through the access hole in the rotor, turn the adjuster star wheel clockwise until it stops (the rotor will no longer turn), then back it off 7-8 clicks counterclockwise. The rotor should then turn freely with no rubbing.
- Reinstall the caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 55-65 N·m (41-48 lb-ft). Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to 108 N·m (80 lb-ft).
- Repeat the procedure on the other side. After installation, apply and release the parking brake lever several times to set the self-adjuster. Test the parking brake on a slope. The vehicle should hold at 4-6 clicks of the lever.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not breathe brake dust. It may contain harmful substances. Work in a ventilated area or outdoors. After replacing the shoes, do not put maximum load on the parking brake for the first 200-300 km, so the shoes can bed in to the drum surface of the rotor.
