Hyundai Grandeur 3.0 GDI G6DG (2012) (Azera): Valve Train Inspection
I could not find a confirmed valve lash adjustment procedure for the G6DG in open sources. Based on the design of the Lambda II engine family, the valves are driven by roller rocker arms on hydraulic lash adjusters, so there is usually no scheduled adjustment with shims or tappets. Verify this for your engine before disassembly. The real tasks are diagnosing valve noise and replacing worn hydraulic lash adjusters or rocker arms.
Part
- 🔩 Valve cover gaskets (left and right) and, if worn, hydraulic lash adjusters with roller rocker arms. Prices vary by manufacturer

Step by step
10 steps- Identify the symptom. A knock or tick on a cold start that goes away after 1-3 minutes most often means a collapsed hydraulic lash adjuster caused by old oil or low oil pressure. A constant knock on a warm engine points to a worn rocker arm, a worn cam lobe, or a problem with the high-pressure fuel pump. GDI injector ticking is normal and is not a valve fault.
- Check the oil level and condition. If the oil is old or dirty, replace it along with the filter, using oil of the recommended viscosity and specification. Drive 500-1,000 km. This is often enough to let the hydraulic lash adjusters bleed up.
- Determine which side the noise comes from. Use a stethoscope on the valve covers to find the cylinder bank (left or right) and the spot where the noise is loudest.
- Read fault codes with a scan tool. Check oil pressure, valve timing operation (CVVT systems), the fuel rail, and misfires. Sometimes the knock is not caused by the valves.
- To open the engine, disconnect the battery, then remove the decorative cover, the air intake duct, the ignition coils, and anything else blocking access. The front bank's valve covers are easier to open, while the rear bank (next to the firewall) requires removing the intake manifold.
- Remove the valve cover of the bank in question, following the bolt loosening sequence (from the edges toward the center when installing, the reverse order applies). Inspect the rocker arms and cam lobes: scoring, roller pitting, or wear mean replacement is needed.
- Rock each rocker arm by hand with the valve closed (cam lobe's back against the roller). Noticeable play or a collapsed adjuster means that pair needs replacing. Turn the engine by the crankshaft pulley bolt in the normal direction of rotation to check.
- Replace worn hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms as a set per bank or per cylinder, marking their positions. Lubricate the contact surfaces with engine oil before installation. Do not swap used parts between cylinders.
- Install the valve covers with new gaskets, and degrease the mating surfaces on the cylinder head. Apply sealant only at the joints with the timing chain cover. Tighten the cover bolts in order from the center toward the edges. The torque is low (about 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft)); verify the exact value against the manufacturer's specification.
- Reassemble in reverse order, add fresh oil, start the engine, and let it run. Check for leaks and confirm the noise is gone. After replacement, the hydraulic lash adjusters may tick for 1-5 minutes.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If your engine turns out to have mechanical lash with shim selection, take the lash values and adjusting element sizes strictly from the manufacturer's table for the G6DG. Do not adjust by feel. Do not turn the engine over with the chain repair locking tools removed, and do not touch the timing chains or valve timing without marks: a shifted chain will cause the valves to hit the pistons. If you lack experience with V6 GDI engines, have a repair shop do the disassembly.
