Hyundai ix35 (1st generation, LM): Front Bumper Cover Replacement
The ix35 front bumper is held by plastic clips and self-tapping screws along the bottom, under the hood and in the wheel wells, and at the sides it slides into guides on the fenders. The job is not difficult, but it takes care: the clips are brittle, and many break during removal. The exact sequence and torque specs for this model are not documented in open sources, so the general approach is given below. Tighten plastic fasteners only snug, with no force or jerking and no overtightening.
Part
- 🔩 Front bumper cover assembly (primed plastic, ready for paint, 1 pc.). Painting is extra. The grille, lower air intake grille, fog lights, brackets and bumper reinforcement, trim moldings and headlight washer covers are sold as separate items. You will often need to transfer them from the old bumper or buy them separately. 2011 equipment varies by market (fog lights, headlight washers, parking sensors), so compare the new bumper with the old one for cutouts and mounting points

Step by step
11 steps- Park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine and point the steering wheel straight ahead. For easier access to the underside, raise the front of the vehicle on a lift or jack stands. Disconnect the negative battery terminal if wiring for the fog lights or parking sensors runs to the bumper.
- Open the hood. Remove the upper plastic clips and screws that hold the radiator upper cover panel (shroud) to the body. The grille is usually removed separately: release its retaining tabs and pull it up and forward. If the grille comes off together with the bumper, remove it later on the bench.
- Remove the engine undercover (if equipped). Remove the fasteners along the bottom edge of the bumper: the clips and screws along its full length, as well as the fasteners to the front brackets, typically 10 mm and Phillips.
- Remove the fasteners in the wheel wells. Pull back the front part of the fender liners by removing the clips so you can reach the screws or bolts at the sides of the bumper. There are usually 2-3 fasteners on each side under them.
- Disconnect the electrical connections. Press the locking tab and unplug the connectors for the fog lights, parking sensors (if equipped) and the headlight washer supply (if equipped; disconnect and label the hoses). Tape and label the wires and hoses so you don't mix them up during reassembly.
- Make sure all fasteners have been removed. Then pull the bumper outward at the side edges away from the fenders, free it from the guides and carefully remove it forward. It is best to work with a helper: one person holds the bumper while the other releases the tabs. Don't pull hard. If the bumper won't come off, a hidden screw or clip is still in place.
- Lay the removed bumper on a soft cloth. Transfer everything needed to the new one: grilles, fog lights and their covers, moldings, washer nozzles, parking sensors, license plate bracket, impact absorber (foam filler) and brackets, if they are separate pieces.
- Inspect the bumper reinforcement, brackets and body mounting areas. If they are bent or cracked from an impact, straighten or replace them, otherwise the new bumper will not fit with even gaps. Replace broken clips with new ones. They are cheap.
- Install the bumper in reverse order. First insert the side edges into the fender guides, then connect the connectors and hoses (it is better to connect them beforehand by moving the bumper slightly closer). Align the bumper with the body and install the upper and side fasteners, then the lower ones. Tighten moderately, as plastic does not tolerate force.
- Check the gaps: between the bumper and the hood, fenders and headlights they should be even, about 3-5 mm. If it sits crooked, loosen the fasteners and adjust the position before final tightening.
- Reconnect the battery, turn on the parking lights, fog lights and headlight washers, and check that they work. If parking sensors are installed, check them by the sound as you approach an obstacle. Reinstall the engine undercover and fender liners.
Common mistakes and warnings
- An unpainted new bumper must be painted to match the body, and it is better to do this before installation, otherwise you will have to mask off the body. Behind the bumper are the reinforcement (absorber) and, depending on the trim level, parking sensors and cameras. If your vehicle has a radar or camera system, sensor position and calibration matter after replacement, so if in doubt, see a repair shop. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; use jack stands. If the collision was serious and damaged structural parts (frame rails, reinforcement), it is better to leave the repair assessment to a body shop technician.
