Jeep Grand Cherokee (4th generation, WK2): Door Window Glass Removal and Installation

Removing the door glass on the Grand Cherokee WK2 (2011-2020) requires removing the door trim panel and disconnecting the glass from the window regulator. The procedure is the same for the front and rear doors. Only the access points for the glass fasteners differ.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 12 Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 7 mm and 10 mm sockets with a 1/4-inch ratchet, flat-blade screwdriver, trim clip remover (plastic pry tool), Torx T-20 socket (optional, for the speaker).

Part

  • 🔩 Front or rear door glass, depending on which one is damaged. Typical manufacturers: Mopar (OE), Pilkington, Carlite

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the door trim panel: Pull the door handle out and use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry off the decorative trim behind it. Open the cover in the lower part of the armrest handle and remove the 7 mm screw. Remove the 10 mm screw behind the door handle and the Phillips screw next to it. Pry up the window switch panel at its front edge, press the lock tab on the green connector, and disconnect it. Insert a flat pry tool into the lower edge of the trim panel and pop the white plastic clips loose around the perimeter. Lift the panel up, disconnect the white door lock connector in the upper corner, and remove the panel.
  3. Temporarily reconnect the window switch panel so you can control the glass position (lower or raise it to the needed position), then disconnect the connector again.
  4. Remove the inner weatherstrip (the horizontal rubber strip along the upper edge of the door). Pry it upward to make room for removing the glass.
  5. Locate the access holes in the metal door frame (closed with plugs). Through them you can see the mounting bolts or clips that hold the glass to the regulator channels. Raise or lower the glass so the fasteners line up with the holes.
  6. Remove the glass mounting bolts (usually two bolts per channel, 10 mm socket) or release the metal clips: insert a thin flat-blade screwdriver or a hook under the clip, press the retainer, and pull the glass upward. If a clip has two pins, push them out from both sides.
  7. While holding the glass, tilt the rear part of the glass slightly upward (to free it from the regulator channels), then carefully lift the glass out through the opening at the top of the door. If needed, ask a helper to support the glass from outside so you don't drop it.
  8. Installation: Lower the new glass into the door through the top opening and guide it into the regulator channels (front edge first, then the rear edge). Align the mounting holes or clips and secure with the bolts (torque 6-9 N·m (53-80 lb-in), moderate force, do not overtighten or the glass may crack) or snap the clips in until they click.
  9. Reconnect the window switch panel and check that the glass moves smoothly up and down. It must not bind or squeak.
  10. Reinstall the inner weatherstrip (seat the rubber channel onto the upper edge of the door).
  11. Install the door trim panel in reverse order: connect the door lock connector, then snap in the clips around the perimeter (align the upper edge of the panel with the slots on the door, then press around the perimeter until the clips click). Connect the window switch panel, install the 10 mm and Phillips screws behind the door handle and the 7 mm screw in the armrest handle, and install the plugs.
  12. Reconnect the battery terminal and check the operation of the power window and the central locking.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The glass is fragile, so work with a helper and do not drop it. When tightening the bolts that secure the glass to the regulator, do not exceed 9 N·m (80 lb-in). Overtightening will crack the glass at the mounting point. If you are replacing the glass because of a crack, check the regulator channels for burrs or deformation, because they can damage the new glass.
