MAN TGS 12.4 D2676 (2017): Diagnosing and Fixing Fault Code 03779-10
Fault code 03779-10 (FMI 10, pressure too low) indicates a loss of rail pressure caused by a leak in the high-pressure system. The EDC control unit detects that the fuel compensation volume has been exceeded, meaning the system cannot maintain the specified injection pressure. This causes the engine to enter limp mode and lose power, and it may stall. External leaks of fuel under pressure of up to 2000 bar are a fire hazard.
Part
- 🔩 Typical candidates: the fuel pressure control valve (PCV) on the high-pressure pump, Common Rail injectors, and check valves in the high-pressure system. Exact OE part numbers depend on the diagnostic results
Step by step
7 steps- Connect a MAN CATS or compatible diagnostic scanner and read all active and stored fault codes. Record the rail pressure values (Rail Pressure Actual/Desired) at idle and under load.
- Check for external signs of fuel leaks. Inspect the high-pressure fuel lines from the high-pressure pump to the rail and from the rail to the injectors for traces of fuel, cracks and loose connections. Pay special attention to the injector fittings and the pressure relief valve on the rail.
- Start the engine and let it idle, and monitor the Rail Pressure Deviation parameter in the scanner. If the deviation exceeds 150-200 bar, the system is not compensating for the leak.
- Check the pressure control valve (PCV) on the high-pressure pump. Measure the coil resistance with a multimeter (normal: 2.5-4.5 ohms). If the reading is outside this range, replace the valve.
- Perform an injector return flow (back-leakage) test. Disconnect the return fuel lines from each injector one at a time, place a graduated container under the injector, and run the engine at idle for 30 seconds. The permissible leakage for the D2676 is no more than 180 mg per day of operation at rated speed (for this test, no more than 5-7 mL per injector over 30 seconds). If the leakage is higher, replace the injector.
- If no external leaks are found, check the check valve on the rail. Remove the pressure relief valve and inspect the seat and seal. Contamination or wear of the seat causes constant leakage into the return line.
- After replacing a component, clear the fault code, run the injection system adaptation through the scanner (Injector Coding / Adaptation function), and take a test drive while monitoring the pressure parameters.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Working on a Common Rail system with pressures of up to 2000 bar requires strict observance of safety precautions. Before disconnecting any part of the high-pressure fuel system, shut off the engine and wait at least 10 minutes for the rail pressure to bleed down. Keep fuel off hot engine surfaces. If you find external fuel leaks, do not operate the vehicle until the fault is repaired (fire risk). If you have no experience with Common Rail fuel systems, take the vehicle to a MAN service center for diagnostics on specialized test equipment.
