Mazda Demio (4th generation, DJ): Steering Wheel Audio Control Switch Replacement
On the Demio DJ, the audio, phone and voice control buttons are located on the steering wheel spokes and connect through the airbag clock spring (spiral cable). Button failure is most often caused by wear of the contact group or damage to the switch itself, not by the head unit. The work is done near the airbag (SRS), so the power disconnection procedure is important. The exact mounting layout of the switch depends on the steering wheel version, so the steps below are given as a general principle.
Part
- 🔩 Steering wheel audio control switch (left or right switch block, depending on trim level: audio, cruise control, Bluetooth/voice). Buy a genuine switch matched to your trim level and the side of installation

Step by step
10 steps- Before replacing, rule out other causes. Check whether the other buttons on the same switch block work, and whether there are faults in the head unit or at the connector. If only some of the buttons do not work, the switch itself is probably faulty. If none of the buttons on either switch block work, check the clock spring and the connectors.
- Turn off the engine, remove the key or switch the ignition to OFF, and set the steering wheel straight ahead. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait at least 1-3 minutes so that the capacitor of the airbag system discharges. Check the exact waiting time in the manufacturer's service manual.
- Do not touch the airbag connectors. After disconnecting the terminal, do not turn the power on until the work is finished.
- Find the switch block mounts. They are usually secured on the outside of the spoke by clips, or by screws from the back. Inspect the steering wheel from behind and from the sides of the spokes. If necessary, carefully pry off the spoke cover with a plastic trim tool, taking care not to scratch it.
- If the airbag module must be removed to reach the switch, remove the module fasteners (Torx) from the back of the steering wheel and carefully move the module toward you. Do not pull on the wires, and do not lay the module face down. Disconnect the airbag and horn connectors, paying attention to the locking tabs.
- Disconnect the switch block connector and remove the faulty switch. Compare it with the new one for shape, number of pins and button icons.
- Install the new switch, connect the connector and make sure it is securely seated. Do not pinch the wires between parts.
- Reassemble the steering wheel in reverse order. If you removed the airbag module, tighten its fasteners to the torque in the manufacturer's specification (usually low, within a few N·m, so do not overtighten).
- Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and check the SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. It should go out after the self-test. Then test the volume, track/station change, mode, phone and voice control buttons.
- If the SRS light stays on or flashes after the work, stop and take the car to a repair shop for diagnosis. Do not drive with a faulty airbag system.
Common mistakes and warnings
- This work is done near the steering wheel airbag. Accidental deployment can cause injury. If you have no experience working with SRS, have a repair shop do the replacement. Do not use a multimeter on airbag connectors. Do not use used switches of unknown origin without checking the condition of the contacts.
