Opel Meriva B: Repairing or Replacing the Center Console Control Buttons

The control buttons on the Meriva B center console (climate control panel, hazard warning lights, seat heaters) can fail due to worn contacts or mechanical damage. To reach the buttons, you need to remove the side trim panels of the console and the control panel.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 10 Tools: Torx T20 screwdriver, plastic trim removal tools for interior panels, small flat-blade screwdriver

Part

  • 🔩 Depends on which buttons are damaged: hazard warning button, climate control unit, seat heater buttons, or power window switches

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Disconnect the battery (negative terminal) to prevent a short circuit while working on the electrical system.
  2. Remove the plastic side trim panels of the center console on both sides (by the driver's and front passenger's feet). Pry them off with a plastic trim tool, pulling toward you to release the clips.
  3. Remove the center air vents. The upper clips hold the tightest, so pull up and toward you.
  4. Remove the 2-4 Torx T20 screws that secure the climate control panel or button unit (the exact number depends on trim level: base or automatic climate control).
  5. Carefully pull the control panel out toward you. Do not yank it, because electrical connectors are attached to the back.
  6. Disconnect the power connectors from the button unit. Note where each one goes (you can take a photo).
  7. Inspect the buttons for cracks, sticking, or damaged contacts. If a button sticks, try cleaning the contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
  8. If a button is broken or the contacts are burnt, replace the whole unit or the individual button (depending on the design, some buttons are soldered to the unit's circuit board).
  9. Install the new or repaired unit in reverse order: connect the connectors, secure it with the screws, and snap the trim panels and air vents back into place.
  10. Reconnect the battery and test all the buttons before final reassembly.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The plastic clips on interior trim are brittle. Use trim tools, not screwdrivers, to avoid breaking the mounting tabs. If only the decorative button cover is damaged (worn paint, scratches), you can use repair stickers instead of replacing the whole unit, but make sure they are compatible with your trim level before buying.
