PAZ PAZ-32054 (1st generation): Rear Drum Brake Shoe Replacement

The rear drum brakes on the PAZ-32054 serve as both the main service brake and the parking brake. The shoes are replaced in pairs on an axle when the lining thickness wears below 5 mm. The procedure requires removing the wheel and drum, and removing the return springs and anchor pins.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1.5-2 hours per side Steps: 17 Tools: jack, wheel chocks, 17/19/22/27 mm wrenches, retaining ring puller, pry bar, pliers, wire brush, rags, Litol-24 grease

Part

  • 🔩 Rear brake shoes with linings (axle set)

Step by step

17 steps
  1. Park the bus on a level surface, engage a gear, and place wheel chocks under the front wheels. Release the parking brake.
  2. Raise the rear axle with a jack and set a safety stand. Remove the wheel.
  3. Press in the expander adjuster lock and turn the adjusting screw clockwise with a wrench until it stops. This retracts the shoes inward and frees the drum.
  4. Remove the drum by pulling it toward you. If the drum is seized, tap around its perimeter with a rubber mallet.
  5. Remove the upper and lower return springs with pliers or a pry bar. Note the position of the springs.
  6. Remove the shoe anchor pins by turning the retaining cups 90 degrees.
  7. Disconnect the parking brake linkage from the rear shoe by removing the cotter pin and the lever pin.
  8. Remove both shoes together with the expander plates.
  9. Clean the backing plate of dust and rust with a brush. Check the drum for scoring. If the grooves are deeper than 0.5 mm, the drum must be machined. The maximum allowable drum diameter after machining is 384.5 mm for 6.75-19 type axles.
  10. Lightly coat the anchor pin bushings with Litol-24 grease. Install the new shoes on the backing plate in reverse order: first fit the expander plates onto the shoes, set them on the anchor pins, and secure them with the cups.
  11. Connect the parking brake lever to the rear shoe with the pin and secure it with the cotter pin.
  12. Install the upper and lower return springs, starting with the upper one, then the lower one.
  13. Fit the drum and check that it rotates freely. The shoes must not drag on the drum.
  14. Adjust the clearance: turn the adjuster lock to the left until it stops, then turn it back to the right by 120-180 degrees. The clearance between the lining and the drum should be 0.5-0.9 mm.
  15. Install the wheel and tighten the wheel nuts to 265-325 N·m (195-240 lb-ft) (27-33 kgf·m). Repeat the procedure for the shoes on the other wheel of the axle.
  16. Lower the bus and press the brake pedal fully 8-10 times to self-center the shoes.
  17. Test the brakes at low speed. There should be no pulling to one side and no unusual noises.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Replace the shoes strictly in pairs, on both sides of the axle at the same time. Replacing them on only one side will cause the bus to pull to one side when braking. Do not allow oil or grease to get on the friction linings, as this will severely reduce braking effectiveness. Wear a protective dust mask during the work, because brake dust contains harmful substances.
