Peugeot 206 (1st generation): Instrument Cluster Removal and Installation

On the first-generation Peugeot 206, the instrument cluster is held by two screws at the top and connects through one or two multi-pin connectors at the back. To get access, you remove the decorative trim (hood) around the cluster. The exact order of fasteners depends on the trim level. A general procedure is described below. There are no specified torque values for these screws. Snug them without force.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-60 minutes Steps: 9 Tools: small Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver (if your car uses Torx fasteners, usually T20), plastic trim pry tools, thin flat-blade screwdriver, soft cloth

Part

  • 🔩 The complete instrument cluster is replaced only if it is faulty. The part number depends on the trim level (with or without tachometer, with or without trip computer, display type). To find the right one, you need the label on the back of the removed cluster

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait 5-10 minutes. This reduces the risk of damaging the electronics or accidentally setting off the airbags.
  2. Lower the steering column to its lowest position, if it is adjustable. This gives you more room for your hand and the cluster.
  3. Remove the decorative trim (hood) around the instrument cluster. It is held by clips and, on some trim levels, by hidden screws. Check the edges, find the screws and remove them. Then carefully pry the trim with a plastic trim tool, starting at the edges, and pull it toward you. Do not use force, the plastic is brittle.
  4. Find the two mounting screws at the top of the instrument cluster, remove them and set them aside.
  5. Carefully tilt the top of the cluster toward you and pull it out a few centimeters. Do not pull hard, the wiring harness is short.
  6. Disconnect the connectors on the back of the cluster. Press the locking tab on each connector and pull it toward you by the housing, not by the wires. Remember where each connector goes. They usually differ in color or shape.
  7. Take out the cluster. If needed, replace the backlight bulbs (the sockets turn a quarter turn) or the cluster itself.
  8. Installation is the reverse of removal. First connect the connectors until they click, then insert the cluster, tighten the two screws and install the trim. Do not overtighten the screws, the plastic mounting points strip easily.
  9. Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on and check that all warning lights come on and that the gauges, speedometer, fuel gauge and backlight work. Start the engine and make sure the immobilizer and oil pressure indicators go out.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not touch the circuit board or the needles with your hands. Static electricity and pressure can damage the electronics. If you install a used cluster, the odometer and immobilizer data may not match your car. In that case it needs to be recoded with specialized equipment at a repair shop. Do all work near the airbag (in the steering wheel) only with the battery disconnected.
