Toyota Highlander 3.5 V6 2GR-FE (2011): Lubrication System Maintenance

The 2GR-FE lubrication system is serviced by changing the oil and the replaceable filter element. The refill capacity with a filter is about 6.1-6.4 L (6.4-6.8 qt). This engine takes synthetic oil in 0W-20 (the manufacturer's recommendation) or 5W-30. Both are acceptable if they meet API SN and ILSAC GF-5. Change interval: 10,000 km or once a year. For city driving and heavy traffic, 7,000-8,000 km is better.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: Socket for the drain plug (usually 14 mm), wrench or socket for the oil filter cap (cap-style socket, about 64-65 mm, 14 flutes), torque wrench, drain pan of 7 L (7.4 qt) or larger, funnel, shop rags, jack and jack stands or ramps

Part

  • 🔩 Oil filter cartridge (replaceable paper element in a housing, for the 2GR-FE), oil filter cap O-ring (usually included with the filter), new drain plug crush washer, engine oil about 6.5 L (6.9 qt)

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes and shut it off. The oil should be warm, but not scalding. Park the vehicle on level ground and raise it on jack stands or ramps.
  2. Remove the plastic under-engine shield if it blocks access to the drain plug and filter. This depends on the trim level.
  3. Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine so the oil drains faster.
  4. Place the drain pan underneath and remove the oil pan drain plug. Let the oil drain for at least 10-15 minutes.
  5. While the oil drains, place rags and a container under the filter housing on the front side of the block. Unscrew the oil filter cap with the cap-style socket. Pull out the cartridge together with the cap and let the oil drain into the housing.
  6. Remove the old filter element and the old O-ring from the cap. Install the new O-ring, lightly lubricated with fresh oil. Insert the new element into the cap.
  7. Wipe the mating surfaces of the housing. Tighten the filter cap to about 25 N·m (18 lb-ft), which is the standard value for caps of this type on the 2GR. Do not overtighten: the plastic cap cracks easily.
  8. Clean the drain plug, install a new crush washer, and tighten the plug to approximately 40 N·m (30 lb-ft). Verify the exact value against the manufacturer's specification.
  9. Pour in about 5.5 L (5.8 qt) of oil, wait a minute, and check the level with the dipstick. Top up to the F mark, using the total capacity of 6.1-6.4 L (6.4-6.8 qt) as a guide.
  10. Run the engine for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure warning light should go out immediately. Inspect the drain plug and filter cap for leaks. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and recheck the level.
  11. While you are there, inspect the areas where the 2GR-FE is known to leak. These are the oil cooler tubes and hoses (the section near the block), as well as the front timing cover and the valve cover gasket. An oil film or seepage in these areas means a repair is needed, not just an oil change.
  12. Monitor oil consumption between changes. This engine tends to use more oil at high mileage. Check the level every 1,000-2,000 km. A noticeable drop in level over 1,000 km calls for diagnosis.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use oil that lacks API SN or ILSAC GF-5 approval, and do not mix oils of different viscosities. Do not tighten the drain plug or filter cap by feel: stripped threads in the aluminum oil pan are expensive to fix. Drain the oil carefully, as hot oil can cause burns. Take used oil to a recycling facility instead of pouring it out. If the oil pressure light comes on after the change or there is a leak, do not drive. Call a tow truck or take the vehicle to a repair shop.
