Toyota Isis (1st generation, XM10): Headlight Leveling Actuator Replacement
The leveling actuator controls the vertical angle of the light beam. Typical signs of failure: a leveling system error on the instrument panel, the beam pointing at the ground or into the sky, or the in-cabin switch not changing the angle. The exact procedure for this model is not documented in open service materials, so the general principle is given below. Check the headlight removal order on your car visually by looking at the fasteners.
Part
- 🔩 Headlight leveling actuator (gear motor) for the correct side, left or right. Used or aftermarket units cost less, and an OE part costs more. Do not confuse it with the leveling control unit (ECU) or the body height sensors on the suspension. These are separate parts. If your trim level has a leveling system that works from a switch instead of automatically, the actuator may be built into the reflector. In that case it is often sold only together with the reflector or the complete headlight assembly. Match the part against the removed headlight
Step by step
12 steps- Turn off the engine, the ignition and the lights. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 5-10 minutes. If the headlights are xenon (HID), be especially careful with the wiring of the ignition (ballast) unit. Do not touch the contacts while the lights are on, and do not switch on a headlight that has been removed.
- Pinpoint the fault before replacing anything. Turn on the ignition and change the switch position, if there is one. Listen for the motor whining inside the headlight. Check the actuator connector for corrosion and broken wires. Quite often the fault turns out to be in the wiring or connector, not the actuator. If the leveling is automatic, check for body height sensor errors and make sure the sensor linkage on the suspension is not bent.
- Open the hood. Remove everything that blocks access to the headlight: the plastic cover above the radiator, decorative clips, the air duct. On many Toyotas the front bumper is also removed, or at least its edge is pulled away. For the Isis, the order depends on whether it is a facelift model. Find the headlight mounting bolts and clips at the top, on the sides and at the bottom in the wheel arch.
- Remove the fender liner (inner wheel well liner) or its front section if the headlight is secured from inside the wheel arch. Remove the bumper fasteners on the wheel arch side. Carefully move the bumper aside and do not pull on the fog light wiring.
- Before removal, mark the headlight position relative to the body with tape and photograph the fasteners. Remove the headlight bolts, release the retainers and carefully slide the headlight forward. Do not pull on the wires.
- Disconnect the headlight connectors: low beam and high beam bulbs, parking light, turn signal, and the leveling actuator connector. Press the locking tabs and do not pull on the wiring harness.
- Place the headlight on a soft surface. The actuator is usually on the rear wall of the housing and is connected to the reflector by a rod or a ball joint. It is held by two or three screws or a bayonet mount. Note the position of the shaft and the rod.
- Remove the actuator fasteners or turn it out of its bayonet mount, then carefully unhook the rod joint. Do not break the shaft or the plastic ball end. If the joint is worn, replace it too.
- Install the new actuator in the same position. Before installing it, apply power to it if possible to confirm that the shaft moves. Then snap the joint onto the reflector until it clicks. Do not use much force. Tighten the screws without overtightening, as the housing plastic is brittle.
- Check the housing seal if you opened the rear cover. The gasket must sit evenly and the cover must close fully. Moisture getting into the headlight will cause fogging and corrosion of the connectors.
- Install the headlight using your marks, connect the connectors and temporarily reconnect the battery. Test the leveling with the switch or in automatic mode. Make sure the shaft moves smoothly and the beam moves up and down. Only after that, fully reassemble the bumper, fender liner and covers.
- Aim the headlights using a wall or screen: the car on level ground, the driver in the seat, the fuel tank about full, and tire pressure correct. Leveling switch in position "0". After replacing the actuator, always check the beam and adjust it if needed with the headlight adjustment screws. If the leveling is automatic and the error remains after replacement, the system may need initialization. This requires a diagnostic scanner. If you do not have one, go to a repair shop.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Incorrectly aimed headlights blind oncoming drivers and reduce visibility in the dark. After any work on a headlight, always check and adjust the beam. If the headlights are xenon, do not work on the ballast unit or the high-voltage wiring without experience. In that case, go to a repair shop.
