Volkswagen Multivan 2.5 AXE (T5, 2008): Turbocharger Replacement
The turbocharger on the 2.5 TDI AXE (174 hp) fails due to oil starvation, bearing wear or failure of the variable geometry control valve. Replacement requires removing the exhaust system and draining coolant from the lower hose.
Part
- 🔩 Garrett GT2052V turbocharger (OE 070145702A, alternatives 070145701H, 070145701HX). Elring gasket kit 716.270, VAG O-ring N91019101, Pierburg variable geometry control valve 7.00868.02.0, engine oil, oil filter, intake pipe gasket, FA1 exhaust clamp 969875

Step by step
18 steps- Drain the engine oil and replace the oil filter. Check the oil pressure in the system, because with low pressure a new turbocharger will fail within a few hours. Make sure the intake tract is airtight.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and remove the engine undercover.
- Disconnect the coolant drain hose from the turbocharger and drain the coolant into a container.
- Remove the muffler: loosen the clamp with a 5 mm hex key and disconnect the hanger with a 13 mm wrench.
- Unbolt the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold with an M10 spline socket. Tightening torque for installation is 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft) (confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual).
- Unbolt the turbocharger from the engine block with an M12 spline socket. Remove the turbocharger together with the intake pipe.
- Disconnect the variable geometry control valve with a 10 mm socket.
- Before installing the new turbocharger, pour clean engine oil into the oil feed inlet and turn the turbocharger rotor by hand until the bearing is filled with oil.
- Replace the gaskets from the Elring installation kit and install the new VAG O-ring N91019101 at the joint with the block.
- Install the new turbocharger on the engine block and tighten the bolts with an M12 spline socket to 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft) (range; confirm the exact value in the service manual).
- Install the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold and tighten the bolts with an M10 spline socket to 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft).
- Connect the variable geometry control valve and tighten the bolts with a 10 mm socket.
- Install the muffler, tighten the clamp with the 5 mm hex key and the hanger with the 13 mm wrench.
- Connect the coolant hose and fill the coolant to the proper level.
- Fill with new engine oil and install a new oil filter.
- Crank the engine with the starter for 5-7 seconds without starting it to fill the turbocharger with oil.
- Start the engine, let it idle for 3-5 minutes, and check for oil and coolant leaks.
- Warm the engine up to operating temperature and check turbocharger operation at various engine speeds.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Before installing the new turbocharger, be sure to replace the engine oil and oil filter, and check the oil pressure and the airtightness of the intake tract. Running the turbocharger without pre-filling it with oil will cause instant bearing wear and failure. The tightening torque of the bolts securing the turbocharger to the manifold and block is a critical parameter, so using a torque wrench is mandatory.
