Bentley Continental Flying Spur 4.0 V8 (2017): Ignition Coil Replacement

The 4.0 V8 TFSI engine (EA824) uses a coil-on-plug configuration, with one coil for each of the eight cylinders. Scheduled replacement of the coils and spark plugs is every 40,000-50,000 km or every 4-5 years. Misfires are most often caused by a failed coil. It is recommended to replace all eight coils at the same time to avoid repeat failures.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1.5-2.5 hours (for all 8 coils) Steps: 10 Tools: Torx T30 socket, extension, ratchet, plastic trim pry tool, flashlight, torque wrench

Part

  • 🔩 OE ignition coil 079905110R (aftermarket equivalents 079905110J, 079905110N). Set of 8. Replacing the spark plugs at the same time is recommended

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the decorative engine cover (clips around the perimeter).
  2. Remove the airboxes on both sides of the engine by undoing the screws and releasing the clips. Remove the frame braces above the airboxes.
  3. The coils become accessible after the upper intake components are removed. Clear the space above the cylinder banks.
  4. For each coil: disconnect the electrical connector (latch on the side) and remove the Torx T30 mounting screw.
  5. Carefully pull the coil straight up. It sits in the spark plug well. If the coil is stuck, use a plastic trim pry tool to separate it from the seal. Do not pry with a metal tool.
  6. Remove the old coil and inspect the plug well and the spark plug contact for oil, carbon deposits or cracks.
  7. Insert the new coil into the spark plug well until it is fully seated (you should hear a distinct click as it locks). Tighten the mounting screw to 6-9 N·m (4.4-6.6 lb-ft). The exact value depends on the engine variant, so follow the manufacturer's specification.
  8. Connect the electrical connector until it clicks. Repeat for the remaining seven coils.
  9. Reassemble the airboxes, frame braces and decorative cover in reverse order. Reconnect the battery terminal.
  10. Start the engine and check for misfires and vibration. If the Check Engine light is on, read the fault codes and, if necessary, clear the memory after a successful start.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The 4.0 V8 TFSI engine is built on the Audi EA824 platform and was used in the Audi S6, S7, S8, Porsche Panamera and Cayenne, so some parts are interchangeable. If you find oil in a spark plug well, check the condition of the valve cover and the spark plug well seals, because oil shortens coil life. Replacing all eight coils and the spark plugs together is recommended to avoid repeat trips to the repair shop.
