BMW X6 (1st generation, E71): Windshield Replacement
Replacing the windshield on a BMW X6 E71 requires careful work with the adhesive sealant and allowing enough time for it to cure. The E71 comes standard with a rain sensor and camera, and optionally a head-up display (HUD) projection, so confirm the equipment level when ordering the glass. In a shop setting the job takes about an hour, after which the vehicle must stay stationary for at least 4-5 hours.
Part
- 🔩 BMW 51317211916 (with HUD projection) or 51317188778 (without projection). Aftermarket alternatives: Fuyao 2456AGAMUV2T (with HUD), Pilkington, genuine BMW

Step by step
12 steps- Protect the hood and instrument panel with film or cloth to guard against glass chips and adhesive.
- Remove the plastic trim pieces and seals around the perimeter of the windshield.
- Cut out the old adhesive sealant with a wire cutting line or a special knife from inside the cabin. Work carefully so you don't damage the body frame or the paint on the opening.
- Use suction cups to lift out the old windshield and lay it on a soft surface.
- Remove the remaining old adhesive from the frame with a scraper, then degrease the perimeter of the opening with isopropyl alcohol.
- Apply primer to the cleaned surface of the frame and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Install the mounting spacers (usually 4) around the perimeter of the opening to ensure an even gap.
- Apply the polyurethane adhesive sealant in a continuous bead around the perimeter of the new windshield or along the body frame. The bead should be 8-12 mm thick.
- With a helper or using suction cups, set the new windshield into the opening and align it using the marks or the mounting spacers.
- Press the windshield down evenly around the entire perimeter and wipe off any excess adhesive with a damp rag.
- Reinstall the seals and trim pieces.
- Leave the vehicle stationary for 4-5 hours for the initial adhesive cure (at 20-25°C / 68-77°F).
Common mistakes and warnings
- The adhesive reaches full strength in 24-48 hours. During the first day, avoid hard acceleration, hard braking, driving over potholes, washing the vehicle and slamming the doors. Incorrect installation or putting the vehicle into service too early can lead to a failed seal and leaks. If you have no experience working with auto glass, it is recommended to go to a specialized shop. The BMW X6 windshield is a structural element that stiffens the body and is critical for safety in a rollover.
