Chery Tiggo 7 1.6 Turbo (2026): Throttle Body Cleaning

The throttle body on the 1.6 Turbo engine gradually becomes coated with oily deposits and soot from crankcase gases. Cleaning is recommended every 15-20 thousand km (about 9,000-12,000 miles), or when you notice a fluctuating idle speed, hard starting, or vibration at idle. The procedure involves removing the throttle body from the engine and washing it with a dedicated cleaner.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 11 Tools: 8-10 mm wrenches (or sockets), Phillips screwdriver, carburetor cleaner or dedicated throttle body cleaner, soft brush or paintbrush, clean rags

Part

  • 🔩 Consumables are usually not required. The sealing ring between the throttle body and the intake manifold normally stays elastic. If it is damaged, replace the gasket

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Disconnect power from the vehicle. Remove the negative battery terminal and wait 2-3 minutes for the capacitors in the ECU to discharge.
  2. Remove the intake duct that runs from the air filter housing to the throttle body (loosen the clamps and take off the duct).
  3. Disconnect the wiring connector from the throttle body (press the locking tab and pull the connector toward you).
  4. Remove the four bolts that secure the throttle body to the intake manifold (they are spaced around the perimeter of the flange). To reach the farthest bolt, you may first need to move aside the adjacent coolant or crankcase ventilation hoses.
  5. Remove the throttle body together with its sealing ring. Inspect the ring. If it is still elastic and has no cracks, reuse it.
  6. Place the throttle body on a clean rag with the throttle plate facing up. Apply plenty of cleaner to the inside of the bore and to the throttle plate itself. Use a soft brush or paintbrush to carefully remove deposits from all corners and from the plate surface. Do NOT put force on the throttle plate shaft, and do not try to force the plate open by hand (the electric actuator is fragile).
  7. Wipe the surface with a clean, lint-free rag. If needed, repeat the cleaner treatment until the deposits are completely removed.
  8. Clean the mating surface on the intake manifold of old deposits.
  9. Fit the sealing ring onto the throttle body flange (you can lightly coat it with silicone grease to make it seat easily). Install the throttle body and tighten the four mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern to 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft). Check the manufacturer's specification for the exact value, and do not overtighten, because you could deform the plastic throttle body housing.
  10. Reconnect the wiring connector, install the intake duct, and tighten the clamps.
  11. Reconnect the battery terminal. Start the engine. The idle may be unstable for the first 10-20 seconds, which is normal. The ECU automatically relearns the throttle position and idle parameters over 5-10 minutes of idling and driving.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use abrasive materials or harsh solvents. They damage the protective coating on the throttle plate and the position sensor. Do not try to open the throttle plate by hand with the ignition off, because you risk damaging the electric actuator gear drive. If the idle is still unstable after more than 15 minutes of engine running following the cleaning, take the car to a repair shop for a forced relearn procedure with a diagnostic scan tool.
