Chevrolet Captiva (1st generation, C100): Folding the Seats Into a Flat Load Floor

On the Captiva C100, the second-row seatbacks fold separately (60/40 split), and in the 7-seat version the third row stows into the cargo floor. You get a flat floor when all the seatbacks are folded down, the headrests are removed or lowered, and nothing blocks the movement of the mechanisms. The location of the levers and pull straps can differ slightly between trim levels, so go by the markings on the seats themselves.

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Clear the cabin and cargo area of any items. Move the front seats forward so that nothing presses against the second-row seatbacks.
  2. If you have the 7-seat version, start with the third row. Open the tailgate and remove the cargo cover if it gets in the way.
  3. Lower the third-row headrests all the way down, or remove them by pressing the release button at the base of the post. If they won't go down, remove them and put them in the cabin.
  4. Pull the strap or lever on the third-row seatback. Fold each section forward onto the seat cushion until it clicks. If the cushion doesn't go down, pull the strap provided for stowing it. The sections fold separately.
  5. Move on to the second row. Remove the headrests: press the release button on the post and pull upward. If a headrest sinks fully into the seatback, you don't need to remove it.
  6. Pull the lever on the upper side of the second-row seatback, or the strap on the seatback. Fold the seatback forward onto the cushion. Fold each 60/40 section separately.
  7. If you end up with a step or ledge instead of a flat surface, slide the second row backward or forward on its rails until the seatback lies flush with the cargo floor. If necessary, tilt the cushion forward.
  8. Check that nothing is pinched around the latches and seat belts: buckles and belt webbing must not end up under the seatbacks.
  9. Run your hand over the surface. It should have no noticeable height differences. Secure cargo with straps to the tie-down loops, because it can slide on the smooth upholstery.
  10. To return the seats to their original position, raise the seatbacks until they click audibly. Pull each one toward you to make sure the latch has engaged. Only then reinstall the headrests.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not drive until the seatbacks are latched in the upright position: an unlatched seatback can shift together with the cargo during braking. Do not carry passengers on folded seats, and do not place heavy objects on the belts and buckles. The exact lever locations and the sequence for your trim level are not documented in detail in publicly available sources, so I have described the general principle. If a lever or strap is stiff, don't apply great force. Instead, check whether a headrest, seat belt, or foreign object is in the way.
