Dodge Caliber (1st generation): Front Left Door Hinge Replacement
The Caliber hinges are bolted to the body pillar and to the door, so the replacement requires no welding or painting. The main task is to remove the door without damaging the wiring harness and to put it back in its original position so the panel gaps stay the same. The exact procedure and torque specs for this model are not documented in public sources, so the steps below follow the general principle for bolt-on hinges.
Part
- 🔩 Front left door hinges, upper and lower, sold as separate items. They are left-side parts and differ from the right-side ones. It is best to buy a new set of mounting bolts

Step by step
11 steps- Open the door and place a jack or support with a soft pad under its bottom edge. The door must rest on the support with no load on the hinges.
- Remove the door check strap (door stop). It is attached to the pillar or to the door with one bolt or pin.
- Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the door wiring harness (power window, lock, mirror, speakers) in the rubber boot at the pillar. To do this, press the connector lock and pull the connector out carefully. If the connector will not release, remove the pillar trim or the dash side trim to reach it.
- Use a marker or tape to outline each hinge on the pillar. This will help you restore the door position with the same gaps.
- Loosen the bolts that hold the hinges to the pillar, holding the door by its edge or keeping it on the support. If it is easier to remove the hinges from the door, do it there. Sometimes you need to remove the front fender to get access, if it covers the hinge mounting bolts.
- Remove the whole door together with the hinges and set it aside on a soft pad.
- Unbolt the hinges from the door (or from the pillar, whichever is easier). Clean the mounting surfaces of dirt and rust, and clean up the threads.
- Install the new hinges at the marks. Start the bolts by hand, then snug them lightly so the hinges hold but the door can still be shifted.
- Hang the door with a helper, tighten the bolts, connect the harness, and close the door halfway to check its position. Check the gaps around the perimeter and the height of the door relative to the fender and the rear door. They should be even.
- If needed, adjust the door by slightly loosening the bolts and shifting it, then tighten the bolts fully. Torque: the exact value for this model is not confirmed, so tighten firmly but without stripping the threads (a guideline for body bolts is 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft); verify against the manufacturer's specification).
- Install the check strap, grease the hinge pins, and check the operation of the power window, lock, mirror and speakers. Connect the battery.
Common mistakes and warnings
- The door is heavy and has electrical equipment inside. Do not remove or hang it alone, or you may damage the fender, the pillar or the harness. Do not remove both hinges without supporting the door. If the door does not close evenly after the replacement, or there are signs of pillar deformation (after a collision), take the car to a body shop.
