Hyundai Getz 1.3 12V (G4EA, 2005): Alternator Belt Tension Adjustment

The G4EA engine uses a manual alternator belt tension system with an adjusting bolt on the bracket. Correct tension is critical: a loose belt slips and wears out faster, while an overtightened belt damages the alternator and water pump bearings.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 15-20 minutes Steps: 10 Tools: 12 mm wrench, 14 mm wrench, torque wrench (recommended)

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Shut off the engine and open the hood. Make sure the engine has cooled down.
  2. Inspect the alternator belt for cracks, delamination and oil stains. If it is damaged, replace the belt.
  3. Loosen the alternator mounting nut "A" (the upper mount to the bracket).
  4. Loosen the lock bolt "B" of the tension adjusting bracket.
  5. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tension bracket clockwise to increase tension and counterclockwise to reduce it.
  6. Check the belt deflection: press with your finger using about 10 kg (22 lb) of force at the midpoint between the water pump pulley and the alternator pulley. Deflection should be 9-11 mm (for 1.1-1.3 L engines).
  7. Tighten lock bolt "B" to 15-22 N·m (11-16 lb-ft).
  8. Tighten alternator mounting nut "A" to 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft).
  9. Recheck the tension and repeat the adjustment if necessary.
  10. Start the engine and listen to the belt. There should be no squealing or unusual noises.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not reuse a used belt after removing it. It loses its elasticity, and correct tension cannot be restored. When replacing the belt, always adjust the tension to the specified deflection.
