Renault Talisman 1.6 16V TCe (2019): Alternator Belt Replacement
The alternator belt (ribbed profile, 6 ribs, length ~1025 mm) on the TCe 1.6 is replaced at the scheduled interval or when it shows visible wear (cracks, delamination, fraying). A home mechanic with a lift or an inspection pit can do this job.
Part
- 🔩 Renault 117201628R (aftermarket equivalents: Dayco 6PK1025, Gates 6PK1025, Bando 6PK1025). It is recommended to check the alternator and the water pump at the same time, since they are in the same belt group

Step by step
15 steps- Put the car on a lift or over a pit. Open the hood.
- Remove the right front wheel (or raise that side of the body).
- Remove the engine undertray and the fender liner (plastic parts). They block access to the lower part of the engine.
- Locate the alternator belt. It is one of the four or five V-ribbed belts, stretched between the crankshaft pulley at the bottom and the alternator pulley at the front top.
- Loosen the belt tensioner mounting bolt (usually two bolts on the tensioner bracket, one of them with an eccentric). The tensioner is located to the right of the alternator. It is adjusted by turning the eccentric bolt or by sliding the tensioner itself along the slot.
- Using a wrench or a special tool, turn the tensioner toward the alternator (to release belt tension). You need about 10-15 mm of slack in the belt when pressing on the middle of the span.
- Remove the old belt from the alternator, crankshaft and water pump pulleys.
- Wipe the pulleys with a dry cloth and check them for runout and cracks. If necessary, clean dust out of the grooves.
- Place the new belt on the alternator pulley first, then carefully onto the water pump pulley (if equipped), then onto the crankshaft pulley (the largest one, at the bottom).
- Release the tensioner. It will automatically tension the belt to the correct position if the tensioner is in good condition. If the tensioner is mechanical (eccentric), turn it all the way in the tensioning direction.
- Check the tension: the belt should deflect 10-15 mm when pressed at the middle of the span between the pulleys. If the tensioner is adjusted with a bolt, tighten it to 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft) (for the exact value, see the manufacturer's service manual).
- Make sure the belt sits straight in the grooves of all the pulleys (not skewed) by turning the crankshaft by hand 2-3 revolutions.
- Install the engine undertray and the fender liner, and tighten the bolts.
- Reinstall the wheel.
- Start the engine and let it idle, listening for any unusual noises. There should be none. Let it run for 30 seconds, then shut it off.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If the belt tensioner has an internal damper (spring) and squeaks or jerks, replace it at the same time as the belt. A tensioner lasts 60,000-100,000 km, after which it loses its spring tension. For the OE part number of the tensioner, check the Renault catalog using your VIN. Do not over-tighten the belt by hand. It leads to premature wear of the alternator and water pump bearings.
