Renault Talisman (1st generation): Fixing a Squeaking Brake Pedal
A squeaking brake pedal is caused by dried-out lubricant at the pivot points of the pedal mechanism. It occurs when the pedal is pressed or released while the car is stationary. The problem is fixed by lubricating the rubbing joints, and the procedure does not require removing the pedal.
Part
- 🔩 white lithium grease spray or silicone spray. If the plastic pedal bushings are worn, confirm the bushing kit part number by VIN

Step by step
7 steps- Turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and place wheel chocks under the wheels.
- Lie down on the floor on the driver's seat side and shine a flashlight on the pedal assembly under the dash.
- Find the three critical friction points: the main pedal pivot pin (the shaft that attaches the lever to the bracket under the dash), the connecting pin between the upper part of the pedal and the brake booster pushrod, and the points where the return spring attaches to the lever and the bracket.
- Put on safety glasses. Spray white lithium grease or silicone spray on each point, using a few short sprays on each joint.
- Slowly press and release the brake pedal 10-15 times to work the lubricant into the joints.
- Wipe off any excess lubricant with a clean rag so it doesn't get on your shoes or floor mats.
- Check the result: press the pedal in a quiet setting, and the squeak should be gone.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Use white lithium grease, since it is safe for the rubber seals on the pushrod. Do not rely on WD-40 as the main fix. It is a temporary measure, and the effect lasts 1-2 weeks. If the squeak comes back a few days after lubrication, the plastic bushings in the pedal pivots are worn, and the bushing kit must be replaced at a repair shop. Do not confuse a pedal mechanism squeak with the sound of brake pads squealing while driving, because they are different problems.
