Renault Talisman 1.6 16v TCE (2019): Brake Fluid Replacement

The Talisman 1.6 TCE uses a hydraulic brake system with ABS. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, so replace it every 2 years, or sooner if it has absorbed water (it loses its clarity or the pedal responds slowly). The procedure is a full bleed of the circuit through the bleeder valves, replacing all the fluid in the lines and the reservoir.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1.5-2 hours Steps: 11 Tools: 8-9 mm wrench (for bleeder valves), syringe or brake bleeding kit, container for old fluid, funnel, rubber hose, rags

Part

  • 🔩 DOT 4 brake fluid (ECE R.3 compliant), 800 mL - 1.2 L (0.85-1.27 qt). Renault REN 1700 H (OE) or equivalent (ATE, Bosch, Motul DOT 4) is recommended

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Open the hood.
  2. Find the plastic brake fluid reservoir on the left side of the engine bay (driver's side). Note the MIN mark on the reservoir wall. It is your reference line.
  3. The master cylinder reservoir has a cap (usually marked with a brake symbol). Carefully remove the cap and draw the old fluid out with a syringe down to the bottom of the reservoir. Dispose of it into the container.
  4. Fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 4 fluid.
  5. Locate the bleeder valves on the calipers at all four wheels: — front left (closest to the disc); — front right; — rear left; — rear right. Each bleeder valve has an 8-9 mm hex.
  6. Bleeding order (standard for front-wheel-drive cars with ABS): rear left → rear right → front left → front right. Start with the rear wheels (they are farthest from the master cylinder).
  7. For each wheel: — fit the rubber hose onto the bleeder valve; — put the other end of the hose into the container; — have a helper pump the brake pedal slowly 5-6 times (all the way down, then release); — on the third press, open the valve a half turn and the fluid will flow into the container; — as soon as the air bubbles disappear from the hose and clean fluid flows, close the valve (tightening torque 5-7 N·m (44-62 lb-in)); — have the helper release the pedal.
  8. Repeat the cycle for each valve, topping up the reservoir with fresh fluid continuously. The level must not drop below MIN.
  9. After bleeding all four circuits, start the engine and press the brake pedal lightly several times. The pedal should feel firm, with no sponginess. Repeat the bleeding for one more round to be safe.
  10. Screw the reservoir cap back on and wipe up any spilled fluid. Dispose of the old fluid as hazardous waste (do not pour it down the drain).
  11. Check the fluid level in the reservoir. It must be between MIN and MAX.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • — Do not mix DOT 3 and DOT 4. Doing so lowers the boiling point and is dangerous for the brakes at speed. — Brake fluid is an aggressive solvent. Keep it off the bodywork and paint (rinse it off with water immediately). — If it gets in your eyes, rinse immediately with water and see a doctor. — If the pedal stays soft or goes to the floor, repeat the bleeding or check the calipers for leaks (the dust boots on the caliper cylinders may be torn).
