Renault Talisman (1st generation): Repairing the Front Bumper Mount Near the Headlight

After a minor impact, the bumper near the headlight can pull away because a retaining clip has popped out or broken. This is a common Talisman problem: the internal plastic weld in the area where the bumper attaches to the fender can crack, or the clip simply pops out of its seat. For a proper repair, remove the bumper, inspect the mount, replace the clip or reinforce the cracked plastic with adhesive.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 10 Tools: Torx T20 driver, 10 mm socket with extension, flat-blade screwdriver, degreaser, plastic super glue (cyanoacrylate) or two-part bumper adhesive.

Part

  • 🔩 bumper retaining clip 7703077435 (aftermarket equivalents FEBI 100542, VAICO V46-0567). If the internal plastic weld on the bumper has cracked, you may need to repair the plastic or replace the complete bumper

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Open the hood. Remove the three Torx T20 screws along the top of the bumper (above the headlights and in the center). Disconnect the air ducts and the hood release cable from the bumper.
  2. From under the vehicle, remove the three Torx T20 screws that secure the lower part of the bumper to the subframe.
  3. Turn the steering wheel fully to the right, then fully to the left. In each wheel well, remove the two screws securing the fender liner to the bumper and bend back the edge of the liner.
  4. Using a 10 mm socket, remove one bolt on each side at the top of the fender (the bolt that attaches the bumper corner to the fender). Release the clips that connect the bumper corners to the fenders by pulling the bumper corners outward and down.
  5. Carefully pull the bumper forward (ideally with a helper). Disconnect the two electrical connectors on the left side (fog lights and headlight washers, if equipped).
  6. Lay the bumper on a flat surface with the inside facing up. Inspect the right corner near the headlight mount: find the clip seat and check whether the internal plastic weld around the seat is intact.
  7. If the weld is cracked, degrease the surface, apply super glue to the crack, and press the parts together firmly for 1-2 minutes. Let it cure for 10-15 minutes. For extra strength, reinforce the seam from the inside with fiberglass cloth or reinforcing mesh and two-part plastic adhesive.
  8. If the clip is broken or missing, install a new 7703077435 clip in the seat (push it in by hand until it clicks).
  9. Install the bumper in the reverse order: connect the connectors, slide the bumper onto the guides, snap the corners onto the clips in the fenders, install the 10 mm bolts (do not overtighten, since the plastic can crack), install the screws in the fender liners, install the lower and upper Torx T20 screws, and reconnect the air ducts and hood cable.
  10. Close the hood and check that the gaps around the bumper are even. If the gap on the right side is still larger, you may be able to make a small adjustment to the fender bracket (loosen the fender bolts, shift the fender 1-2 mm, and tighten them again).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not repeatedly snap the clip in without inspecting the inside of the bumper, as this will make the plastic crack worse. Wear gloves when working with super glue and avoid skin contact. If the gaps do not return to normal after the repair, the bumper reinforcement bar or the fender bracket may be deformed, and the body geometry should be checked at a repair shop.
