Renault Talisman 1.6 TCe 200 (2024): Throttle Body Cleaning
Cleaning the throttle body on the 1.6 TCe (M5M) engine is recommended every 40,000-60,000 km, or when you notice a fluctuating idle speed, hard starting, or hesitation during acceleration. The procedure includes removing the air intake duct, cleaning the throttle plate without fully removing the throttle body assembly, and performing a mandatory relearn after reassembly.
Part
- 🔩 Throttle body or carburetor cleaner (aerosol), throttle body gasket (if worn)

Step by step
11 steps- Turn off the engine and let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Open the hood and remove the engine cover (if equipped).
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal (required to reset the ECU's adaptive parameters).
- Loosen the clamp on the air intake duct at the air filter housing and remove the duct from the throttle body.
- Remove the 4 throttle body mounting bolts with a Torx bit (usually T25 or T30). Tightening torque during assembly is 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual).
- Carefully move the throttle body aside without disconnecting the electrical connector or the vacuum hoses (full removal is not required).
- Hold the throttle plate in the fully open position (by hand or with a flat-head screwdriver). Spray the cleaner on the inside surface of the bore and on both sides of the throttle plate.
- Wipe the surfaces with a microfiber cloth or rag to remove carbon deposits and oil residue. Repeat spraying and wiping until completely clean.
- Inspect the rubber gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold. Replace it if you see cracks or tears.
- Install the throttle body, tightening the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft). Reconnect the air intake duct and tighten the clamp.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Perform the relearn: turn the ignition key to the ON position (without starting the engine), wait 10 seconds, then turn it to OFF. Repeat the cycle 5 times.
- Start the engine and warm it up to its operating temperature of 90 °C. Let it idle for 1-2 minutes to complete the throttle calibration.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use aggressive solvents (acetone, WD-40). They can damage the protective coating on the throttle plate and cause corrosion. Do not touch the throttle plate with metal objects. If the idle speed has not stabilized after the relearn (it fluctuates above 1,000 rpm or drops below 600 rpm), a scan-tool relearn at a dealer or specialized repair shop is required.
