Renault Talisman (1st generation): Windshield Replacement

Replacing the windshield on a Renault Talisman is a difficult procedure that requires special equipment and skills. The windshield is equipped with a rain/light sensor, a lane assist camera and heating. It is critical not to damage the electronics and to ensure a watertight installation. We recommend leaving the job to a specialized shop.

Difficulty: Hard Time: 2-3 hours (installation 1.5-2 hours + at least 1 hour before the vehicle can be driven), full adhesive cure 24 hours Steps: 16 Tools: two vacuum suction cups, wire or cut-out knife for cutting the sealant, scraper, glass primer, polyurethane adhesive sealant (310 mL (10.5 fl oz) cartridge), caulking gun, degreaser, rags, protective covers for the interior and body, screwdrivers and trim tools for removing trim panels

Part

  • 🔩 Windshield with heating, rain/light sensor, mirror mount and acoustic layer. Check the OE part number by VIN with an official Renault dealer (quality aftermarket options are available: XYG 7301AGACMVZ, GLAVISTA 100919, SAINT-GOBAIN 775906, all with acoustic properties). Polyurethane windshield adhesive sealant (for example 3M 08693 or Sika 221)

Step by step

16 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 5 minutes (this de-energizes the camera and sensors).
  2. Remove the wiper arms (13 mm wrench), then the plastic cowl panel below the windshield (clips).
  3. Disconnect the lane assist camera connector (located at the top center of the windshield, behind the mirror). Remove the plastic camera bracket. It must be transferred to the new windshield while keeping its position relative to the markings.
  4. Carefully remove the interior rearview mirror (turn it counterclockwise or remove the screw at the base, depending on the mount type).
  5. Protect the body edges, hood and instrument panel from damage with film or cardboard.
  6. Attach the vacuum suction cups to the outside of the windshield. Using wire or a cut-out knife, cut through the polyurethane adhesive around the perimeter from inside the cabin (work with a partner: one person holds the suction cups, the other does the cutting).
  7. With a helper, lift the windshield off using the suction cups. Lay it on a soft surface.
  8. Remove the remains of the old sealant from the body opening with a scraper, leaving a base layer 1-2 mm thick (it serves as the foundation for the new adhesive). Clean dust and dirt from the opening.
  9. Degrease the mounting surface on the body and the perimeter of the new windshield with a dedicated cleaner.
  10. Apply primer to the bonding area of the windshield (the black ceramic band around the perimeter) and let it dry for 5-10 minutes.
  11. Install the camera bracket on the new windshield in exactly the same position (there are guides). Connect the camera connector WITHOUT disconnecting it afterward. This is important for preserving calibration.
  12. Apply the polyurethane adhesive sealant evenly around the perimeter of the windshield as a triangular bead 8-10 mm high (or onto the body opening, depending on the technology used).
  13. With a helper, set the windshield into the opening using the suction cups and align it using the marks (the gaps must be even). Press the windshield against the body by hand around the perimeter.
  14. Install the wiper arms, the cowl panel and the rearview mirror.
  15. Reconnect the battery terminal. Do not slam the doors or wash the car for at least 24 hours (full adhesive cure time). You can drive after 1-2 hours, avoiding sudden maneuvers and rough roads.
  16. After the windshield is replaced, the lane assist camera must be calibrated. Take the car to a shop with diagnostic equipment (a bench procedure or a road test).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Replacing a windshield with an ADAS camera and sensors is a highly complex job. Installation errors lead to water leaks into the cabin, wind noise at speed and incorrect operation of the safety assist systems. Polyurethane adhesive is toxic, so wear gloves and work in a ventilated area. If you lack experience, we strongly recommend going to a specialized auto glass shop (Carglass, Mobiscar or similar). The cost of the work is justified by the watertightness guarantee and the protection of the electronics. An OE Renault windshield may be unavailable even in Europe. Quality European aftermarket options (XYG, Saint-Gobain, Glavista) with an acoustic layer are an acceptable replacement.
