Renault Talisman 1.5 dCi K9K (2019): DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Regeneration

The DPF (diesel particulate filter) on the 1.5 dCi K9K (3rd generation) clogs with soot after 60,000-80,000 km. Renault uses active regeneration, injecting fuel into the exhaust onto the hot catalyst. Forced regeneration with a scan tool is more effective and safer than hard driving.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 30-60 minutes (active regeneration), plus 2-3 hours of engine idling or spirited driving Steps: 10 Tools: Diagnostic scanner (multi-brand), laptop/PC with software, high-pressure hoses (optional), gloves, safety glasses

Part

  • 🔩 Not required for the regeneration itself. If the DPF needs replacing: OE 8200822373 or aftermarket equivalents from Bosch/Mahle

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Park the car in an open area, away from people and buildings. The engine may smoke and drone during the process.
  2. Connect a diagnostic scanner (Delphi, Autocom, Launch or similar) to the OBD-II port under the dashboard on the left side of the steering wheel.
  3. Open the menu: Renault → Talisman → Engine control (Moteur) → Live data and find the DPF soot load or DPF ash load parameter (in percent or grams).
  4. If the value is above 80%, regeneration is required. If it is above 95%, the filter is overloaded and may need to be removed and cleaned mechanically.
  5. Go to Actuation → DPF regeneration (Régénération FAP). The procedure activates fuel injection into the exhaust and raises the catalyst temperature to 600-700°C.
  6. Watch the progress on the scanner screen (there should be a filter load bar). The process takes 20-40 minutes depending on the load.
  7. During regeneration: — the exhaust pipe will be hot, do not touch it; — a burning smell and smoke are normal; — engine speed may change; — do NOT shut off the engine and do NOT disconnect the scanner.
  8. When regeneration is done, the scanner will display "Regeneration completed". Soot load should drop from 95% to 20-40%.
  9. Disconnect the scanner and let the car idle for 5 minutes to cool down the exhaust.
  10. Take an easy drive of 20-30 km at medium engine speeds (2000-3000 rpm) to fully restore the filter. Alternative (without a scanner): If you don't have a scanner, passive regeneration will kick in on its own: the DPF/FAP warning light on the instrument cluster will start flashing and the car will switch to a higher fuel consumption mode. You need to drive hard (60+ km/h, 2500+ rpm) for 2-3 hours. This is less effective and harder on the engine.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • — Do not drive with the DPF light on for more than 100 km, or the filter will become overloaded and will need restorative service at a repair shop. — If regeneration starts while you are driving, keep driving calmly and do not accelerate hard. — If soot load stays stuck at 100% for several days and regeneration does not start automatically, the post-injection fuel injector or the exhaust pressure sensor may be faulty. Shop diagnostics are required. — The K9K DPF has a service life of about 180,000-200,000 km with proper oil maintenance and timely regeneration.
