Renault Talisman I generation: Permanently disabling the Start-Stop system

The Start-Stop system on the Renault Talisman activates automatically every time the engine is started. There are two main ways to disable it permanently: changing parameters in software with the DDT4ALL diagnostic program, or installing a ready-made memory module that remembers the state of the disable button.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 30-60 minutes Steps: 18 Tools: Windows laptop, ELM327 adapter (Bluetooth or USB), DDT4ALL software (free), or a ready-made Start-Stop memory module

Step by step

2 methods — pick one
Method 1 Software disabling with DDT4ALL (requires technical skills) 11 steps
  1. Download DDT4ALL (open-source Renault diagnostic software) and install it on a Windows laptop.
  2. Get an ELM327 adapter (Bluetooth or USB version). It is a universal diagnostic scan tool.
  3. Locate the OBD-II diagnostic connector in the Talisman. It is on the driver's side, low down under the instrument panel on the left. Remove the protective cover.
  4. Plug the ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II connector and turn the ignition on (the engine does not need to be running).
  5. Launch DDT4ALL, select the connection type (Bluetooth or USB), and establish communication with the car.
  6. In the list of control units, select the UCH (Body Control Module, the central body electronics unit). IMPORTANT: choose only the version shown in green. Red versions are not compatible with your car and can damage the module.
  7. Go to: UCH → GEE → GEE - Configuration.
  8. Find the parameter E_B_STOPSTARTINHIBIT_CF. In the READ column the value should be false (system active).
  9. In the WRITE field, change the value to true (system permanently disabled).
  10. Click the Write button for the parameter and wait for confirmation that the write succeeded.
  11. Turn the ignition off, disconnect the adapter, and start the engine. The Start-Stop system should no longer activate automatically.
Method 2 Installing a Start-Stop memory module (simple solution, no programming) 7 steps
  1. Get a dedicated Start-Stop memory module for Renault (compatible with the 2015+ Talisman). It is a small device that is spliced into the wiring of the Start-Stop button.
  2. Locate the Start-Stop disable button on the center console (usually next to the automatic transmission selector or under the climate control).
  3. Remove the trim bezel around the Start-Stop button (pry it off with a plastic trim tool; it is held by clips).
  4. Disconnect the Start-Stop button connector from the factory wiring.
  5. Connect the memory module between the factory connector and the button (the wiring diagram is included with the module; it is usually an intermediate adapter harness).
  6. Secure the module behind the panel (double-sided tape or a plastic zip tie) and reassemble the panel in reverse order.
  7. Turn the ignition on and press the Start-Stop disable button once. The module will remember this state and restore it at every start.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Changing control unit parameters with DDT4ALL carries a risk of damaging the electronics if done incorrectly. Choose only compatible ECU versions (green in the program's list) and follow the procedure exactly. A failed write may require the UCH to be reprogrammed at an authorized dealer. The memory module is safer because it does not change the factory software and only emulates a press of the button. Permanently disabling Start-Stop increases fuel consumption by 0.2-0.5 L/100 km (about 0.5-1.2 mpg) in city driving and raises CO2 emissions.
