Step by step
9 steps- Shut off the engine and let it cool for 10-15 minutes.
- Open the hood. On the passenger side of the engine, find the four black ignition coils, 7-8 cm tall, mounted directly on the spark plugs.
- Press the locking tab on each coil (it faces up or to the side) and pull the coil upward with a slight twisting motion. Do not yank it, as it may stick.
- Using a spark plug socket with an extension, unscrew the old plug counterclockwise. Be careful not to drop the plug into the spark plug well.
- Wipe dirt and moisture out of the spark plug well with a rag.
- Thread the new plug in by hand until it stops, then finish tightening it with the spark plug socket to 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft). Do not overtighten.
- Push the ignition coil back into the well, making sure it is fully seated and the locking tab has latched.
- Repeat the procedure for the other three plugs. It is recommended to replace them one at a time so you do not mix up which coil goes with which cylinder.
- Start the engine and check that there are no fault codes.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Use spark plugs exactly as specified in the catalog. A wrong heat range will cause carbon fouling or overheating of the cylinder-piston group. Do not let moisture get into the spark plug wells when cleaning.
