Renault Talisman 1.6 TCe 200 (2024): Accessory Drive Belt Replacement
The accessory drive belt on the 1.6 TCe 200 (M5M) gasoline engine drives the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and coolant pump. Replace it every 30,000 km (18,600 mi) as scheduled maintenance, or sooner if you see cracks, separation or oil contamination. The job is done from the top of the engine bay using the automatic belt tensioner.
Part
- 🔩 V-ribbed drive belt (7PK1179, 1179 mm, 7 ribs). OE part number for TCe engines: confirm with an official Renault dealer using your VIN. Aftermarket equivalents: Gates K070975, Dayco 7PK1179, Continental 7PK1179

Step by step
14 steps- Raise the hood and let the engine cool completely (at least 30 minutes after the last drive).
- Remove the upper decorative engine cover (if fitted) by pulling it upward off its clips.
- Check the belt routing diagram on the label under the hood, or take a photo of the current belt routing so you can install the new belt correctly.
- Locate the automatic belt tensioner (usually at the top, on the alternator side). It has a hex socket for a 13 mm key.
- Insert the 13 mm hex key into the tensioner socket and turn it clockwise to compress the tensioner. The belt will go slack.
- While holding the tensioner compressed, insert a 4 mm locking pin (or a drill bit of the right size) into the service hole on the tensioner body to lock it in the compressed position.
- Remove the old belt from all pulleys, starting with the most accessible one (usually the alternator or the idler pulley).
- Inspect all pulleys and rollers for wear, binding or play. If needed, replace the tensioner pulley or idler pulleys at the same time.
- Install the new belt following the routing diagram. Make sure it is centered on each pulley (not shifted toward the edges) and that all ribs sit in the grooves.
- Remove the locking pin from the tensioner. The tensioner spring will automatically tension the belt.
- Turn the crankshaft by hand 2 full revolutions clockwise (using a 19 mm wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt). Make sure the belt stays in place and does not slip off or shift.
- Visually check the belt tension and its position on all pulleys.
- Reinstall the engine cover (if you removed it).
- Start the engine and let it idle for at least 60 seconds. Listen for unusual noises (squealing, slipping).
Common mistakes and warnings
- When working near the rotating parts of the engine, always switch off the ignition and remove the key. Do not use a worn or damaged belt. If it breaks while driving, you lose power steering assist, the engine can overheat and the battery will discharge. If you hear squealing or chirping after installation, check that the belt is seated correctly on the pulleys and check the condition of the tensioner pulleys. When replacing the belt on a car with more than 60,000 km (37,300 mi) on the odometer, it is recommended to replace the tensioner pulley and idler pulleys at the same time to prevent a sudden failure.
