Renault Talisman 1.6 dCi 130 (2017): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

The R9M 1.6 dCi engine requires an oil change every 10,000 km or once a year. The system capacity is 5.5 L (5.8 qt), but up to 6 L (6.3 qt) may be needed for a complete drain when working over a pit. The procedure is standard and is done with a warm engine so the old oil flows better.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: 13 mm wrench (drain plug), oil filter puller or 27 mm socket, funnel, oil drain pan (6-7 L (6.3-7.4 qt)), gloves

Part

  • 🔩 Engine oil meeting Renault RN 0720 specification (5W-30 or 5W-40), 5.5-6 L (5.8-6.3 qt). Recommended brands: Elf Evolution FULL-TECH FE 5W-30, Castrol GTX RN-SPEC RN720 5W-30. Oil filter: Renault 152093920R or equivalents (Mann HU7010z, Mahle OX563D). Drain plug gasket: Renault 110265505R

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes), shut it off, and let it cool for 2-3 minutes for safety.
  2. Raise the car on a lift or drive it over an inspection pit, and secure it with the parking brake.
  3. Remove the engine undertray (the fasteners depend on trim level, usually plastic clips and Torx bolts).
  4. Unscrew the oil filler cap on the engine to improve draining.
  5. Place the drain pan under the drain plug (located at the bottom of the oil pan), loosen the plug with a 13 mm wrench, and let the oil drain completely for 10-15 minutes.
  6. While the oil is draining, unscrew the oil filter with a filter puller or a 27 mm socket (it is on the right side in the direction of travel and accessible from above). Wipe the mounting surface with a rag.
  7. Clean the drain plug, replace the sealing washer with a new one (110265505R), and tighten the plug to 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft). If you don't have a torque wrench, tighten by hand plus a quarter turn, and do not overtighten.
  8. Lubricate the new filter's sealing ring with clean oil and screw the filter on by hand until it seats, then three-quarters of a turn more (do not use a tool to tighten it).
  9. Reinstall the engine undertray.
  10. Pour 5 L (5.3 qt) of new oil through the filler neck, wait a minute, then add another 0.3-0.5 L (0.3-0.5 qt), and check the level on the dipstick (it should be between MIN and MAX, closer to MAX).
  11. Screw on the filler cap, start the engine, and let it idle for 1-2 minutes (the oil pressure light should go out within 2-3 seconds), then shut it off.
  12. Wait 5 minutes, check the level on the dipstick, and top up to the MAX mark if necessary. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use oils without the RN 0720 approval, as this can cause problems with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) on diesel engines. Do not overtighten the drain plug, because the threads in the aluminum oil pan strip easily. Monitor the oil level during the first few days after the change, since the filter absorbs up to 0.2 L (0.2 qt) and you may need to top up. Above 150,000 km of mileage, it is recommended to shorten the change interval to 7,500 km.
