Engine oil and oil filter replacement

On the T-Roc 1.5 TSI (gasoline engine, EA211 evo series), the oil filter is a cartridge type: you replace only the paper element in a plastic housing with a cap. The factory service interval is about 15,000 km or 1 year. For severe use (city driving, short trips, heavy traffic), it is better to shorten it to 8-10 thousand km.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 13 Tools: Lift or inspection pit, drain plug wrench (hex or Torx, check your plug type), 36 mm socket for the filter cap (flat "cup" type), torque wrench, 5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt) drain pan, funnel, shop rags, light lubricant for the sealing rings if needed

Part

  • 🔩 Oil filter element complete with sealing rings (cartridge type, VAG 04E 115 561 H, equivalents Mann HU 6015 z, Mahle OX 1170D, Hengst E1017H D568; check against your VIN before buying, since engines in this series have similar-looking variants), new drain plug gasket (sealing washer), engine oil approx. 4-4.5 L (4.2-4.8 qt) meeting VW 508 00 / 504 00 (SAE 0W-20; check the owner's manual for permitted alternatives and viscosity)

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature for 3-5 minutes, then shut it off. Park the car on a level surface or lift. The oil should be warm, but not scalding.
  2. Open the hood and remove the decorative engine cover (held by clips or rubber mounts, pulls straight up). Unscrew the oil filler cap to speed up draining.
  3. Remove the lower engine undercover (plastic, secured with Torx screws and clips). Remember where the fasteners of different lengths go.
  4. Place the drain pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain completely, at least 10-15 minutes, until only occasional drops remain.
  5. Clean the plug and its seat, and replace the sealing washer. Install the plug and tighten it with a torque wrench: about 30 N·m (22 lb-ft) (use the exact value specified by the manufacturer for your plug). Do not overtighten, the oil pan is lightweight.
  6. For the filter: lay rags around the housing and unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise with the 36 mm socket. Pull out the cap together with the filter element. When you unscrew it, the oil in the housing drains back into the engine through a built-in valve, but a small amount may spill.
  7. Remove the old element from the cap and replace the cap sealing ring (included with the filter). Lightly lubricate the new ring with clean oil. Install the new element into the cap until it clicks.
  8. Thread the cap with the filter in by hand until it stops, then tighten it with a torque wrench: about 25 N·m (18 lb-ft) (confirm with the manufacturer's specification). Make sure the ring does not twist or pop out of its groove.
  9. Pour in fresh oil through the filler neck, about 3.5-4 L (3.7-4.2 qt), wait a couple of minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. Top up to the MAX mark, but do not exceed it. Close the filler cap.
  10. Start the engine for 30-60 seconds and wait for the oil pressure light to go out. Inspect the drain plug and filter cap for leaks. Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  11. Check the oil level on a level surface and top up if needed to between the MIN and MAX marks (closer to MAX).
  12. Reinstall the lower undercover and the decorative cover. Reset the service interval through the instrument cluster menu ("Settings" → "Service") or with a diagnostic scan tool if the menu has no such option.
  13. Take the used oil and old filter to a collection point for used automotive fluids. Do not pour them down a drain or onto the ground.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only oil that meets VW 504 00 / 508 00. Unsuitable oil increases the risk of coking, accelerated timing chain wear, and turbocharger problems. Do not overfill. Excess oil foams and can push oil into the crankcase ventilation system. Do not overtighten the drain plug or the filter cap: the housing is plastic, and a crack will cause a leak and require replacing the part. Keep an eye on the oil level during the first week after the change.
