Step by step

11 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running), then shut it off and wait 2-3 minutes for the oil to drain down into the oil pan.
  2. Raise the car on a lift or position it over the pit, and remove the lower engine undercover (if fitted). It is usually held by 6-8 Torx T25 or T30 screws.
  3. Place the drain pan under the drain plug in the oil pan (at the rear of the pan, closer to the transmission). Loosen the drain plug counterclockwise with a 13 mm wrench. Let the oil drain completely, about 10 minutes.
  4. While the oil is draining, locate the oil filter housing at the front of the cylinder block on the right side (the driver's side when viewed from the front). Unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise with a 74 mm socket or a universal filter wrench.
  5. Remove the old filter cartridge from the housing and wipe the seat with a clean rag. Make sure the old sealing ring came off with the cap and was not left behind in the housing.
  6. Lubricate the sealing ring of the new filter with clean engine oil and install the new cartridge in the housing. Tighten the filter cap to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft).
  7. Replace the copper or aluminum washer on the drain plug (always use a new one at every oil change). Tighten the plug to 30 N·m (22 lb-ft).
  8. Lower the car and open the oil filler cap (on the engine top cover). Pour in 5.5 L (5.8 qt) of new oil through a funnel.
  9. Close the filler cap and start the engine. Let it idle for 30-60 seconds (the oil pressure light should go out within 2-5 seconds). Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  10. Check the oil level with the dipstick. It should be between the minimum and maximum marks (ideally closer to the maximum). If necessary, top up in portions of 100-200 mL until the correct level is reached. The total capacity including the filter is 5.8 L (6.1 qt).
  11. Inspect the oil pan and filter housing for leaks. Reinstall the undercover. Reset the service interval counter through the instrument cluster menu (Setting → Service → Assyst Plus → Full service reset; the reset button must be held down).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only oils meeting MB 229.5 or MB 229.51. Other specifications (for example, generic 5W-40 API SN oils without Mercedes approval) will shorten engine life. Always replace the drain plug washer, because reusing it leads to oil leaks. Do not overtighten the plug or the filter cap, as the threads in the aluminum oil pan and housing strip easily.
