Kia Morning 1.0 G3LA (2024): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

Maintenance schedule for the Kia Morning III (Picanto): change the oil and filter every 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. With frequent short trips, heavy traffic, or city driving, change it more often, every 7,000-10,000 km. The job is simple, but it is important to drain the oil with the engine warm and not to overtighten the plug or the filter.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: 17 mm wrench for the drain plug, oil filter wrench (strap or cup type), funnel, drain pan (5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt) capacity), torque wrench, shop rags, gloves, lift, pit, or two ramps/jack stands.

Part

  • 🔩 Synthetic engine oil, viscosity 5W-30 or 0W-30, API SL/SM or higher, ACEA A5/B5, about 3-3.5 L (3.2-3.7 qt) (check the dipstick and the owner's manual for the exact capacity and specification). Oil filter for the Kappa 1.0 (G3LA) engine. New drain plug sealing washer

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes to operating temperature, then shut it off. The oil should be warm, but not scalding hot. Park the car on level ground and set the parking brake.
  2. Raise the car on a lift or drive it over a pit. If the car has an engine undercover, remove it.
  3. Place the drain pan under the oil pan. Open the oil filler cap on the valve cover so the oil drains faster.
  4. Use a 17 mm wrench to remove the oil pan drain plug. Let the oil drain completely, 5-10 minutes.
  5. While the oil is draining, position the drain pan under the oil filter, which is located on the cylinder block, toward the front. Unscrew the old filter with the filter wrench. It will still contain oil, so tilt it carefully.
  6. Wipe the mounting surface on the block. Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter with fresh oil. If the filter will sit upright, pour a little oil into it.
  7. Screw on the new filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten it about another 3/4 turn. Do not overtighten it with a tool.
  8. Wipe the plug and its seat, install a new sealing washer, and tighten the drain plug. Tightening torque is approximately 30-40 N·m (22-30 lb-ft) (verify the exact value against the manufacturer's specification).
  9. Lower the car. Using the funnel, add about 3 L (3.2 qt) of oil, wait a couple of minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts until the level is between MIN and MAX, closer to the upper mark. Close the filler cap.
  10. Start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within 1-2 seconds. Check for leaks at the filter and the drain plug.
  11. Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick again, topping up if necessary. Reinstall the engine undercover.
  12. Reset the service reminder through the instrument cluster menu if it is active. Take the used oil and filter to a recycling collection point.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not fill oil above the MAX mark: the excess foams up and can get into the crankcase ventilation system. Do not reuse the old drain plug washer, as it may leak. Do not overtighten the filter or the plug: the oil pan threads are aluminum and strip easily. Work carefully around the hot engine and exhaust system: burns are possible.
