Volkswagen Talagon 2.0 TSI (2021): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

The Volkswagen Talagon with the 2.0 TSI EA888 engine requires an oil change every 10,000 km or once a year per the maintenance schedule. To extend turbocharger life and prevent deposit buildup, shortening the interval to 7,500-8,000 km is recommended. The procedure does not require any special equipment.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 11 Tools: T-45 Torx socket, T-25 Torx screwdriver, 3/8" ratchet, funnel, drain pan (5+ L (5.3+ qt)), shop rags, gloves

Part

  • 🔩 Oil filter VAG 06L115562B (equivalents: Mann HU6013z, Mahle OC456), drain plug with washer M14×1.5 (Dorman 090-182), synthetic engine oil VW 504.00 5W-30 or 5W-40, 5 L (5.3 qt)

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature, shut it off, park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  2. Open the hood, remove the oil filler cap, and pull the dipstick up to release any vacuum.
  3. Remove the engine undershield: unscrew the Torx T-45 bolts around the perimeter and the Torx T-25 screws in the center mounts, then set the shield aside.
  4. Place the drain pan under the drain hole and unscrew the drain plug counterclockwise with the T-45 socket. Let the used oil drain completely (5-7 minutes).
  5. Replace the aluminum washer on the drain plug with a new one and tighten the plug to 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, since the threads in the oil pan are aluminum.
  6. Loosen the oil filter housing counterclockwise by hand or with a filter wrench, then remove the old filter along with any remaining oil.
  7. Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with clean oil, install the filter in its seat, and screw it in by hand until it contacts the seal, then tighten an additional quarter turn. Do not overtighten with a tool.
  8. Pour 4.5 L (4.8 qt) of new oil through the filler neck and wait 2-3 minutes for it to drain down.
  9. Check the level with the dipstick. It should be between MIN and MAX. Top up if needed, to the upper third of the range.
  10. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Shut it off, wait 5 minutes, then recheck the level and top up to the proper level.
  11. Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks, then reinstall the engine undershield.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only oil that meets VW 504.00 or VW 507.00 specifications. Other standards are not suitable for the turbocharged EA888 engine and can cause accelerated turbocharger wear. Do not cut corners on the oil filter: counterfeit elements have poor filtering capacity and let abrasive particles into the oil system. When changing oil on a vehicle with more than 100,000 km, inspect the drain plug for metal shavings. Their presence may indicate wear of the camshaft or turbocharger.
