Toyota Yaris 1.5 Hybrid (1NZ-FXE, 2020): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The 1NZ-FXE hybrid engine requires 0W-20 synthetic oil and a change every 10,000 km. The procedure is standard for the TNGA-B platform, using a cartridge-type filter accessed from below.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-45 minutes Steps: 13 Tools: 14 mm wrench, 64/14 oil filter cap wrench or equivalent, funnel, drain pan (at least 4 L (4.2 qt)), torque wrench (recommended), rags

Part

  • 🔩 Oil filter cartridge 04152-YZZA6 (aftermarket equivalents Mann HU 7008 z, Bosch F 026 407 096), Toyota 0W-20 engine oil API SN or higher (ILSAC GF-5/GF-6), drain plug gasket 90430-12031 (single use)

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Warm the engine to operating temperature, then turn off the ignition and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle on a lift or set it on ramps, and secure it with the parking brake.
  3. Remove the engine undercover if installed (usually 4-6 clips or bolts).
  4. Place the drain pan under the drain plug in the oil pan (on the right side or in the center, depending on trim).
  5. Loosen the drain plug with a 14 mm wrench by turning it counterclockwise, and let the oil drain completely (3-4 minutes).
  6. Install a new copper gasket on the drain plug, thread it in by hand until snug, then tighten with a torque wrench to 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft).
  7. Place the drain pan under the oil filter housing (on the left at the front of the engine, vertical plastic cap).
  8. Unscrew the filter cap with the cap wrench by turning it counterclockwise, then remove the old cartridge and the sealing rings.
  9. Wipe the seating surfaces of the cap and housing with a dry rag, install the new sealing rings (supplied with the filter), and lubricate them with a drop of fresh oil.
  10. Insert the new cartridge into the housing, thread the cap in by hand until it makes contact, then tighten an additional quarter turn (18-20 N·m (13-15 lb-ft) if using a torque wrench; do not overtighten, as the housing is plastic).
  11. Pour 3.6 L (3.8 qt) of fresh 0W-20 oil in through the oil filler neck.
  12. Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute, shut it off, wait 3 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
  13. Top off the oil if necessary (usually another 0.1-0.2 L (0.1-0.2 qt) is needed), then reinstall the engine undercover.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • For Toyota hybrid vehicles, it is critical to use 0W-20 specification oil. Thicker oil reduces the efficiency of the start-stop system and increases fuel consumption. Dispose of used oil at a designated collection facility.
