Honda Vezel 1.5 Hybrid (2019): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
Engine oil on the hybrid Honda Vezel (HR-V in the US) should be changed every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. Hybrid models require low-viscosity 0W-20 synthetic oil because of the engine's frequent start-stop cycles and the tight layout of the engine bay. The procedure is simple and suitable for a DIY owner.
Part
- 🔩 Honda oil filter 15400-RTA-003 (aftermarket equivalents Mahle OC 617, Mann W 811/80). Engine oil: 0W-20 synthetic, API SN or higher, ILSAC GF-5 (Honda Ultra LEO, Castrol MAGNATEC Hybrid 0W-20, Mobil 1 0W-20). Oil capacity: 3.3 L (3.5 qt) with filter change, 3.1 L (3.3 qt) without filter change
Step by step
10 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running), then shut it off and let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Park the car on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Raise the front of the car with a jack and place it on jack stands, or drive it onto a pit or lift. Remove the plastic underbody splash shield by undoing its fasteners with a Phillips screwdriver.
- Place a drain pan of at least 4 L (4.2 qt) under the drain hole. Loosen the drain plug with a 17 mm socket wrench (it is located at the bottom of the oil pan). Let the oil drain completely (7-10 minutes).
- Inspect the copper sealing washer on the drain plug. If it is deformed or flattened, replace it with a new one. Reinstall the plug and tighten it to 30-40 N·m (22-30 lb-ft) (39 N·m (29 lb-ft) is recommended for most Honda models).
- Locate the oil filter on the upper part of the engine on the right side (near the exhaust manifold). Unscrew the old filter by hand, counterclockwise. If it will not budge, use an oil filter wrench or, as a last resort, drive a screwdriver through it for leverage.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface with a clean rag. Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter with fresh engine oil. Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten it an additional three-quarters of a turn (270 degrees). Do not use a tool to tighten it.
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap on the engine cover. Using a funnel, pour in 3.0 L (3.2 qt) of new 0W-20 oil. Reinstall the cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter. Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it all the way, and pull it out again. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks, closer to MAX. If necessary, add oil in 100 mL increments, rechecking the dipstick each time.
- Reinstall the underbody splash shield. Dispose of the used oil and filter at a recycling collection point.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Honda hybrid models are equipped with a high-voltage battery. Do not touch the orange high-voltage cables at the rear of the vehicle. An engine oil change does not involve working on the hybrid system, but follow general safety precautions. Use only certified 0W-20 oil. Oils of other viscosities (5W-30, 5W-40) reduce fuel economy and can damage the catalytic converter because of increased fuel consumption during cold starts.
