Honda Vezel LEB (2019): Coolant Replacement
On the Honda Vezel (HR-V) with the LEB engine, the cooling system capacity is 3.6 L (3.8 qt). The original Honda Type 2 coolant is rated for 10 years or 100,000 km, but replacement every 2-3 years is recommended under normal operating conditions. The procedure includes draining, flushing (if necessary) and bleeding air from the system.
Part
- 🔩 Honda Type 2 Antifreeze/Coolant (part numbers 08CLA-P99-0F0A8, OL999-9011 or OL999-9001), premixed 50/50. Quantity: 4 L (4.2 qt)
Step by step
10 steps- Shut off the engine and let it cool completely for at least 1-2 hours. Open the hood, set the climate control temperature to maximum heat, then turn the ignition off. This opens the heater valve.
- Place a drain pan with a capacity of at least 5 L (5.3 qt) under the engine. Remove the engine undercover if equipped.
- Slowly turn the radiator cap counterclockwise 1/8 turn and wait for the pressure to release. Then remove the cap completely.
- Remove the reservoir cap. Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator (on the right side as viewed from the driver's seat) and loosen it with a 10-12 mm wrench. Drain the coolant into the pan.
- For a complete drain, it is recommended to remove the drain bolt on the cylinder block (located at the rear of the engine, accessible through the right wheel well or from below). Fit a short hose onto the bolt to direct the flow into the pan. Typical drained volume is 3.3-3.6 L (3.5-3.8 qt).
- Tighten both drain plugs (torque 10-15 N·m (7-11 lb-ft); do not overtighten, as the radiator's plastic parts can be damaged).
- Slowly pour fresh Honda Type 2 coolant through the radiator filler neck until it is completely full (the coolant should reach the base of the filler neck). Fill the reservoir to the MAX mark.
- Install the radiator cap. Start the engine, turn the heater to maximum and let the engine idle for 3-5 minutes. Then raise the engine speed to 2500 rpm and hold it for 30-40 seconds to open the thermostat and purge air pockets.
- Shut off the engine and let it cool for 10 minutes. Check the level in the radiator and top up with coolant if needed. Start the engine again and warm it up to operating temperature (the fan should turn on 1-2 times), watching the temperature gauge.
- Shut off the engine and let it cool. Check the level in the reservoir and radiator, and top up to between the MIN and MAX marks. Check for leaks around the drain plugs and hoses.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. The pressure can spray out boiling coolant and cause burns. Do not mix coolant types (G11/G12/G13) with the original Honda Type 2, as this can cause sludge to form and damage the water pump. If coolant gets on your skin or in your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Dispose of used coolant in accordance with local regulations. Do not pour it down a drain or onto the ground.
