Hyundai Tucson 2.0 (2008): Coolant Replacement
On the Tucson JM, replace the coolant every 45,000-60,000 km or every 3 years. A quirk of this model is that there is no drain plug on the engine block, so a full replacement takes several drain-and-fill cycles, or a machine-assisted exchange at a repair shop. A partial replacement through the radiator can be done at home.
Parts
2- 🔩 G12+ or G11 antifreeze (premixed, or concentrate mixed 1:1 with distilled water). System capacity is 7.8 L (8.2 qt)
- 🔩 you need 8 L (8.5 qt) for the replacement

Step by step
9 steps- Let the engine cool for at least 2 hours to avoid burns and reduce pressure in the system.
- Place the drain container under the radiator and remove the engine skid plate (if installed).
- Find the radiator drain plug, a white or black wing-type petcock at the bottom of the radiator on the right-bumper side. Turn it counterclockwise to open it.
- Open the radiator cap (not the expansion tank cap) to let air in so the coolant drains faster. About 2.5-3 L (2.6-3.2 qt) will drain out.
- Disconnect the thin hose from the expansion tank and lower it into the drain container to drain the remainder.
- Close the radiator drain plug and pour new antifreeze in through the radiator filler neck (not the expansion tank) up to the top edge. Use a funnel.
- Start the engine, set the heater to maximum, and warm the engine to its operating temperature of 80-90°C (2-3 minutes). Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand to push out air pockets.
- Shut off the engine and let it cool for 20-30 minutes. Repeat the drain-and-fill 1-2 more times to better flush the old coolant out of the engine block and heater core.
- After the final fill, warm up the engine and drive 10-15 km, then check the level in the expansion tank (between MIN and MAX with the engine cold). Top off if needed.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If you need a full replacement with flushing (heavy contamination, or switching to a different type of antifreeze), use a radiator flush product, then do 5-6 drain-and-fill cycles with distilled water, warming the engine to 80°C between cycles. For the fastest and most complete replacement, go to a repair shop with a coolant exchange machine, which removes all the fluid from the block and heater core in one pass.
