Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSI CZEA (2021): Coolant Replacement

Replacing the coolant on the 1.4 TSI CZEA engine requires a partial drain through the hoses, because the radiator has no factory drain valve. Replacement is recommended every 60,000 km or 5 years. Use genuine G13 coolant or the compatible G12 Evo. Do not mix them.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 4-5 hours Steps: 15 Tools: spring hose clamp pliers, hose pinch clamps, drain pan 10-12 L (10.6-12.7 qt), air compressor (recommended), funnel, refractometer for checking coolant concentration, 8-10 mm wrenches, protective gloves, clean rag.

Part

  • 🔩 G13 concentrate (G013A8JM1) or G12 Evo (G12E050A2) - 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt), distilled water - 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt). The total cooling system capacity of the 1.4 TSI is about 7-8 L (7.4-8.5 qt)

Step by step

15 steps
  1. Let the engine cool down completely (at least 2 hours after the last drive). Opening the cap on a hot engine is dangerous because pressurized steam can blow out.
  2. Open the hood and find the expansion tank on the right side of the engine bay. Slowly turn the cap a half turn through a rag to release the residual pressure, then remove it completely.
  3. Remove the engine undertray (8-10 self-tapping screws or Torx T25 screws) and place the drain pan under the radiator.
  4. Find the lower radiator hose (on the left side in the direction of travel, under the engine) or the heater return hose. Put a pinch clamp on the hose upstream of the disconnection point, loosen the spring clamp with pliers, and carefully remove the hose. About 2.5-3 L (2.6-3.2 qt) of coolant will drain by gravity.
  5. To remove the remaining coolant, blow out the system with a compressor through the expansion tank (no more than 0.5 bar, in short bursts). Another 1-2 L (1.1-2.1 qt) will come out. Without a compressor, some of the coolant will stay in the engine block and radiator.
  6. Reinstall the hose and tighten the clamp (screw-type clamps: 3-4 N·m (2.2-3.0 lb-ft); spring clamps snap into place with a click).
  7. Pour distilled water into the expansion tank up to the MAX mark (about 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt); the water will spread through the system).
  8. Start the engine and let it warm up until the cooling fan switches on (90-95 °C, 10-15 minutes at idle). Then raise the engine speed to 2500-3000 rpm for 2-3 minutes to purge air pockets and open the thermostat.
  9. Shut off the engine, let it cool for 30-40 minutes, and drain again through the hose. If the liquid is dirty, repeat the flush with distilled water 2-3 more times until the drained water runs clear.
  10. After the final flush, drain all the water and blow out the system with a compressor. Reinstall the hoses and check that the clamps are sealed.
  11. Fill with G13 or G12 Evo concentrate mixed 50/50 with distilled water (total volume 7-8 L (7.4-8.5 qt): 3.5-4 L (3.7-4.2 qt) of concentrate + 3.5-4 L (3.7-4.2 qt) of water). Pour slowly in portions of 0.5 L (0.5 qt), letting the coolant spread through the system.
  12. Start the engine and warm it up until the cooling fan switches on. Then let it run for 5 minutes at 2000-2500 rpm to bleed the air. Shut off the engine and wait for it to cool down.
  13. Check the level in the expansion tank. On a cold engine it should be between MIN and MAX. Top up with the mixture if needed.
  14. Check the coolant concentration with a refractometer. The freezing point should be about minus 35-40 °C. If the freezing point is lower than minus 50 °C (too much concentrate), drain some of the mixture from the tank and top up with distilled water.
  15. Install the undertray and close the hood. Monitor the level for the next week. If it drops, check the clamps and hoses for leaks.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not mix G13 and G12 Evo. They have different chemistries (G13 is hybrid, G12 Evo is lobrid). If you don't know which coolant is in the system, do a full flush with distilled water before filling with the new coolant. Do not use tap water, because its salts cause corrosion of aluminum parts and scale buildup. If you have no experience working on cooling systems, go to a repair shop. Incomplete air bleeding leads to engine overheating and cylinder head gasket damage.
