Volkswagen Tiguan (2nd generation): Washer Reservoir and Electric Pump Removal and Installation
On the Tiguan II, the washer reservoir sits in the front left of the engine bay and extends partly under the front bumper and the fender liner. The pump (or pumps) is seated in a sealing grommet in the wall or bottom of the reservoir. To remove the reservoir completely, you need access from below, through the fender liner and the bumper mounts. The exact order of fasteners depends on trim level. The procedure below is the general sequence for this model. Check sizes and the number of screws as you go.
Part
- 🔩 Washer reservoir assembly (sold separately), electric washer pump (motor-pump), pump sealing grommet, filler neck cap. If you are removing the reservoir only to replace the pump, the pump with its grommet is enough. Exact OE numbers depend on trim level (with or without headlight washers and a fluid level sensor), so no part number is given here

Step by step
10 steps- Park the car on level ground, turn off the engine, and switch off the ignition. Because you will be working under the front end, disconnect the negative battery terminal so the pump cannot run accidentally and to prevent short circuits at the connectors.
- Use up or drain the washer fluid. To drain it, disconnect the hose at the pump and lower it into a container, or draw the fluid out through the filler neck with a syringe or bulb. If you are removing the whole reservoir, draining is mandatory.
- For access from below, raise the front left of the car, remove the front left wheel, and remove the fasteners of the front left fender liner (screws and plastic clips). Fold the fender liner back or remove it so the lower edge of the reservoir and the pump are visible.
- If the pump is located deep behind the bumper, loosen the front bumper fasteners on the wheel arch side (screws and clips along the edge), and release or unclip the retainers at the top. You do not need to remove the whole bumper. Pulling the left corner away is enough. If that does not give enough room, remove the bumper completely, first disconnecting the headlights, fog lights, and parking sensors if fitted.
- Disconnect the pump's electrical connector. Press the locking tab. Do not pull on the wire. If there is a fluid level sensor, disconnect its connector too.
- Disconnect the washer hoses from the pump and from the reservoir fittings. Before doing this, note or photograph which hose goes where (windshield, rear window, and headlight washers if fitted). The hose connectors may be quick-release type. Squeeze the clip with your fingers and pull the hose off straight, without tilting it.
- Pump replacement only: pry the pump out with a flat-blade screwdriver, or carefully work it out of the sealing grommet with a twisting motion. Remove the grommet together with the pump, and install a new one if it is deformed or hardened. Insert the new pump into a grommet moistened with washer fluid until it seats with a distinct click, so there is no leak.
- Reservoir removal: remove the reservoir mounting bolts and screws (usually several at the top and bottom, and some may be reachable only from below). Lift the filler neck out of its seat in the body, then carefully guide the reservoir down or sideways without catching the wiring harnesses and brackets. Do not use heavy force, as the reservoir plastic is brittle.
- Installation is the reverse of removal: first seat the reservoir in its mounting locations and filler neck, then secure it, then reconnect the hoses and the pump and level sensor connectors. Tighten the fasteners moderately, without stripping the threads in the plastic (use the manufacturer's specified torque. As a guide, snug by hand only).
- Refit the bumper, fender liner, wheel, and battery terminal. Fill the reservoir with washer fluid, run the pump, and make sure there is pressure at both sets of nozzles (windshield and rear window) and no leaks at the grommet, fittings, or hoses. Check that no fluid level sensor fault appears on the instrument cluster.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use plain water in winter. Frozen fluid will crack the reservoir and damage the pump, and if the pump runs dry or against frozen lines, it overheats quickly and fails. Plastic clips on the fender liner and bumper become brittle in cold weather, so do the job in a warm place and keep spare clips on hand. If you are not confident about taking the bumper apart, take the car to a repair shop. It takes them about an hour.
