Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI DFGA (2017): Glow Plug Replacement

The glow plugs on the DFGA engine should be replaced every 60,000-100,000 km (37,000-62,000 miles) or when glow plug control module fault codes appear. One glow plug (cylinder 1) is equipped with a combustion chamber pressure sensor and has a different part number. The procedure requires care: ceramic glow plugs are fragile, and at mileages over 100,000 km (62,000 miles) they can seize and break when you try to remove them.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 10 Tools: 10 mm deep socket (long), 12 mm socket (for the glow plug with the pressure sensor), extension, torque wrench (range up to 15 N·m (11 lb-ft)), needle-nose pliers, penetrating oil (WD-40 or equivalent)

Part

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the engine cover (clips around the perimeter).
  2. 2-4 hours before the replacement, treat the threads of each glow plug with penetrating oil: spray WD-40 into the glow plug wells and let it soak in.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from all four glow plugs (pull the locking tab up, slide the connector off).
  4. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (70-80°C (158-176°F)). Thermal expansion makes removal easier.
  5. Use the 12 mm socket to remove the cylinder 1 glow plug with the pressure sensor (03L 905 061 G). Turn it slowly, without jerking.
  6. Use the 10 mm socket (with a long extension) to remove the other three glow plugs (059 963 319 AB). If you feel resistance, add more penetrating oil and wait 10-15 minutes.
  7. Clean the glow plug wells of carbon and oil deposits with a dry, clean rag. Do not use solvents.
  8. Install the new glow plugs: first thread them in by hand until they stop (make sure the threads run smoothly without cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench to 12-15 N·m (9-11 lb-ft). Do not lubricate the threads of the new glow plugs, as this leads to overtightening.
  9. Reconnect the electrical connectors, install the engine cover, and reconnect the battery.
  10. Turn the ignition on for 5-10 seconds (without starting the engine). The glow plug indicator on the instrument cluster should light up, then go out. Start the engine and check that no fault codes appear.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • On the DFGA engine, the glow plugs are ceramic and extremely fragile. At mileages over 120,000 km (75,000 miles), glow plugs often seize in the cylinder head threads, and the ceramic rod can break off inside the well when you try to remove it. The broken piece can only be extracted by removing the cylinder head. The risk of breakage does not depend on the mechanic's skill. Always use penetrating oil and warm up the engine before replacement. If a glow plug will not budge, do not use force. Take the car to a repair shop with TDI experience.
