Hyundai Tucson (4th generation, NX4): Rear Bumper Removal and Installation

The Tucson NX4 rear bumper is held by hidden screws and bolts under the liftgate, at the wheel arches and underneath, and its sides slide into guides on the fenders. If it has parking sensors or blind-spot sensors, disconnect their connectors before removal. Exact socket sizes and torque specs for this model are not confirmed in public sources, so the steps below describe the general procedure for this type of bumper.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1–1.5 hours Steps: 10 Tools: trim removal tool set (plastic pry tools), Phillips and flat screwdrivers, socket set and ratchet (usually 8 mm, 10 mm), replacement plastic clips, masking tape, clean soft bumper cover or blanket, helper

Part

  • 🔩 The bumper itself is not needed if you are only removing it. For replacement, get spare plastic clips and push-pins for the bumper and fender liner mounting. They often break during removal. If the bumper is damaged, you need a complete rear bumper cover (painted or primed). Price varies widely by trim level and manufacturer

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Park the car on a level surface, shut off the engine, and turn the ignition off. If the bumper has radar sensors or a camera, disconnect the negative battery terminal to be safe. Prepare a place to lay the bumper face up on a soft cloth or cardboard.
  2. Open the liftgate. Remove the plastic trim covers or plugs along the top of the opening above the bumper. Remove the screws or bolts that secure the top of the bumper to the body. Some fasteners may be hidden under the weatherstrip or trim.
  3. Remove the lower undercover or splash shield of the rear bumper, if equipped. Remove the screws and pull out the push-pins along the entire lower edge.
  4. Pull back the rear edges of the fender liners, remove the screws, and pull out the push-pins at the rear of the wheel arches. This gives you access to the side bolts of the bumper. If there is not enough room, remove the fender liners completely.
  5. Remove the side bolts or screws that secure the bumper to the fenders at the wheel arches. There are usually 2–3 on each side.
  6. Carefully pull the side edges of the bumper outward so they come out of the guides on the fenders. Pull gently so you do not break the guides or scratch the paint.
  7. Pull the bumper back slightly and disconnect all connectors. These include the parking sensors, blind-spot radars (if equipped), license plate lights, and rear fog light connectors. Press the locking tab and pull on the connector body, not the wire. Place the connectors where they cannot fall behind the body.
  8. With a helper, move the bumper straight back away from the body until it is free of the top and side mounts. Do not yank it, to avoid breaking the guides or damaging the reinforcement bar behind the bumper.
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. First, connect all connectors. Then fit the bumper's side edges onto the fender guides and make sure the top edge sits evenly and the gaps to the liftgate and fenders are consistent.
  10. Start all screws and bolts by hand first, then tighten them. The torque for these small bolts is usually low, around 5–10 N·m (4–7 lb-ft). Check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual. Do not overtighten, since the plastic cracks easily. Reinstall the fender liners, undercover, and trim covers. Turn the ignition on and check that the parking sensors and license plate lights work. If the car has blind-spot radars or a camera, check after installation that there are no error messages on the instrument cluster.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Blind-spot radars and parking sensors are very sensitive to bumper position. If the bumper sits off-center or crooked, the systems may work incorrectly or show errors. If you are replacing the bumper after a collision, inspect the bumper reinforcement bar and its mounts. If driver-assist system errors appear, take the car to a repair shop for inspection and calibration.
