Honda Vezel (1st generation): Electronic Parking Brake Adjustment
The 2019 Honda Vezel is equipped with an electronic parking brake controlled by a button below the automatic transmission selector. The adjustment is performed automatically by the electronics. When replacing the rear brake pads, the calipers must be put into service mode with a diagnostic scan tool. If the brake does not hold the vehicle or shows an error on the instrument cluster, the system needs calibration or the caliper electric motors need to be checked.
Part
- 🔩 Usually not required (if faulty: parking brake switch 35355-T7A-J01, rear caliper electric motor)
Step by step
9 steps- Preparation: Park the vehicle on level ground, turn the ignition on without starting the engine, and put the selector in P. Battery voltage must be at least 12.5 V (connect a battery charger if necessary).
- Connect the scan tool to the OBD2 connector under the steering column, to the left of the driver.
- Enter the scan tool menu and select the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) section or Brake Pad Maintenance Mode.
- Activate service mode. The system will automatically retract the rear caliper pistons, and you will hear the electric motors whirring (10-20 seconds).
- Service the rear brakes: replace the pads or check the condition of the rotors (if that is the purpose of the job). The calipers must stay in service mode until the work is finished.
- Exit service mode with the scan tool by selecting Exit Maintenance Mode or Calibration. The system will extend the pistons until they contact the new pads.
- Calibration: After exiting service mode, apply the parking brake by pulling the button up, then release it by pressing the button down. Repeat the cycle 2-3 times so the system learns the new piston positions.
- Holding test: Park the vehicle on a 15-20 degree slope, apply the parking brake, and shift the selector to N. The vehicle must not roll.
- Drag check: Fully release the parking brake and drive 50-100 meters. The rear wheels must spin freely, and the rotors must not get hot.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not try to push the rear caliper pistons in by hand without activating service mode. Doing so will damage the electric motors and cause errors on the instrument cluster. Do not disconnect the battery during calibration. The system may log a fault and require a reset at a repair shop. If you do not have a scan tool, go to a Honda dealer. Adjusting the system without diagnostic equipment is not possible.
