Honda Vezel 1.5 Hybrid (2019): Spark Plug Replacement
On the hybrid version of the Vezel (HR-V in many markets) with the L15B engine, the spark plugs are replaced every 30,000 km or 18 months. The procedure is somewhat harder than usual because of the engine bay layout with the hybrid components. It is important to follow the tightening torque of 23 N·m (17 lb-ft), because iridium plugs are sensitive to overtightening.
Part
- 🔩 Genuine NGK DILZKAR7C11S spark plugs (Honda OE 12290-5R0-003) or Denso DXE22HCR11S (Honda OE 12290-5R0-004). 4 pieces required
Step by step
15 steps- Shut off the engine and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. On the hybrid, the power control unit and the electric motor are located close to the internal combustion engine.
- Open the hood. Disconnect the negative terminal of the high-voltage battery (if your model's safety instructions call for it), or simply de-energize the ignition system.
- Remove the plastic decorative engine cover (usually held by clips) to access the ignition coils.
- Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector upward.
- Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts (usually one bolt per coil) and pull the coils out of the spark plug wells. When removing them, pull straight up without rocking, because the coils fit tightly.
- Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air or wipe them with a rag so that dirt does not fall into the cylinders when the plugs are removed.
- Using a 14 mm spark plug socket (thread M12 x 1.25), unscrew the old plugs counterclockwise. Take the first half-turn carefully. If a plug does not turn, do not use force.
- Check the gap of the new plugs with a feeler gauge. It should be 1.1 mm (it is usually set at the factory, but it is better to check).
- Thread the new plugs in by hand until they touch the seat (make sure the thread turns freely and do not cross-thread it).
- Tighten with a torque wrench to 23 N·m (17 lb-ft). If you do not have a torque wrench: after the plug touches the seat, turn it a quarter turn (90 degrees). Do not overtighten, because iridium plugs are fragile.
- Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the inside of the rubber boots of the ignition coils (optional, but it extends their service life).
- Install the ignition coils back into the wells. They should seat with a distinct click. Tighten the mounting bolts.
- Connect the coil electrical connectors until the locking tab clicks.
- Install the decorative engine cover and reconnect the 12 V battery terminal (if you disconnected it).
- Start the engine. A slight vibration is possible in the first few seconds (the ECU adapts to the new plugs). Check that no Check Engine codes appear.
Common mistakes and warnings
- On hybrid versions of the Vezel, high-voltage hybrid system components are located near the engine. Do not touch the orange cables and units. When replacing the spark plugs, work only on the internal combustion engine. Use only genuine iridium spark plugs of the specified type, because unsuitable plugs will cause misfires and damage the catalytic converter.
