Toyota Camry XV70 2.5 A25A-FKS (2018): Spark Plug Replacement

The 2.5 L naturally aspirated A25A-FKS in the XV70 (8th generation, 2015-2021) needs its spark plugs replaced every 60,000-70,000 km. On this engine the plugs are easy to reach, and you don't need to remove the engine undercover. The procedure is standard, with no water ingress concerns and no complicated components in the way.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 10 Tools: 16 mm spark plug socket, socket extension, ratchet, electrical tape, breaker bar

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Let the engine cool down completely and open the hood.
  2. On the right side of the engine (in the direction of travel), you will find 4 black caps with ignition wires. The left side (in the direction of travel) is also accessible.
  3. Remove the cap from the first spark plug (cylinder numbering: 1-2-3-4 from left to right in the direction of travel). Disconnect the wire by pulling on the cap (not the wire!). If the wires stick, wiggle the cap left and right.
  4. Insert the 16 mm spark plug socket with the ratchet and lower it into the spark plug hole (wire removed).
  5. Unscrew the spark plug with the ratchet, turning counterclockwise. Pull out the old plug.
  6. Check the gap of the new plug (it should be 1.0-1.1 mm and is usually preset). If needed, adjust it by bending the side electrode.
  7. Insert the new plug into the socket and carefully thread it in by hand (avoid cross-threading). Tighten with the ratchet to a torque of 18-22 N·m (13-16 lb-ft). Don't overtighten, or you may strip the threads in the aluminum cylinder head.
  8. Remove the spark plug socket and push the wire cap back on (it should seat with a click).
  9. Repeat steps 3-8 for the other three cylinders.
  10. After replacement, start the engine and listen for knocking or misfires. There should be no error codes.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • — Do not mix up the ignition wires between cylinders. If you remove all four at once, mark them with electrical tape (1L, 2L, 3L, 4L) before removal. — Do not mix old and new spark plugs on the same engine. Replace all 4 plugs at the same time. — If you use non-OEM plugs, make sure the electrode type and gap are compatible. The A25A-FKS is a four-valve engine without direct injection, so standard plugs fit. — At your next service, check the condition of the high-voltage wires (the fabric braid should not be frayed, and the contacts should be copper and clean).
