Toyota Camry 2.5 A25A-FKS (2018): Serpentine Belt Replacement
The serpentine belt on the A25A-FKS (2.5 L naturally aspirated engine) should be replaced every 100,000-150,000 km or when visibly worn (cracks, separation, glazing). On the XV70 Camry the alternator is located in the lower part of the engine, and the belt drives the alternator and the A/C compressor.

Step by step
12 steps- Disconnect the negative battery terminal (wait 30 seconds for the capacitors to discharge).
- Open the hood and locate the A/C compressor (lower left of the engine) and the alternator (right).
- Locate the belt tensioner: a plate with a pulley on the left side of the engine (near the belt). On the A25A-FKS the tensioner is mechanical, with bolt adjustment.
- Loosen the tensioner mounting bolt (14 mm wrench) by 2-3 turns. The belt should go slack.
- Remove the old belt from all pulleys (alternator, compressor, water pump, crankshaft). Record the old belt's routing on paper or with a photo.
- Inspect all pulleys for cracks, damage to the coating, and play. If a pulley has play, replace it.
- Install the new belt in the same order: crankshaft → compressor → alternator. Make sure the belt sits evenly in the grooves of each pulley without misalignment.
- Turn the crankshaft by hand (using the 17 mm bolt at the front of the engine) or use a ratchet. The belt should rotate smoothly through 2-3 revolutions.
- Tension the belt: press on the middle of the belt between the alternator and the compressor with your hand. Deflection should be 10-12 mm (about 1 cm).
- Tighten the tensioner bolt to 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft). Verify the exact value in the service manual for your VIN.
- Turn the engine by hand again for 3-4 revolutions and check for squeaking or runout.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal, start the engine and let it idle, and listen for 30-40 seconds for unusual noises.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not leave the belt too loose when tensioning it (deflection over 12-14 mm), as it may slip off. Over-tensioning (deflection under 8 mm) overloads the alternator bearings. If the tensioner has play at its mounting bolt, replace it at the same time (it is an inexpensive part). Squealing for a few seconds on startup after replacement is normal as the belt seats into the pulleys.
