Toyota Camry 2.4 2AZ-FE (2005): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 2AZ-FE engine uses a spin-on oil filter located at the front of the engine block near the oil pan. Refill capacity with a filter change is about 4.1-4.3 L (4.3-4.5 qt). Change the oil every 10,000 km (6,000 mi) or once a year. If you mostly make short trips or drive in heavy stop-and-go traffic, don't stretch the interval.
Part
- 🔩 Engine oil 5W-30 or 5W-20 (0W-20 is acceptable), API SL/SM or newer, ILSAC GF-3 or higher, about 4.5-5 L (4.8-5.3 qt). Toyota oil filter 90915-10003 (aftermarket equivalents from Denso, Purolator, WIX, Mann). New drain plug gasket

Step by step
11 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil flows more easily. Don't let it get fully hot, to avoid burns. Park the car on level ground and shut off the engine.
- Raise the front of the car on jack stands or drive it onto ramps. If your trim level has a plastic engine undercover, remove it.
- Remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover so the oil drains faster.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug at the lowest point of the oil pan and remove the plug. Let the oil drain for 5-10 minutes.
- While the oil drains, place the pan under the filter and unscrew it counterclockwise with the filter wrench. The filter housing still contains oil, so remove it carefully and keep the pan under it. Make sure the old rubber gasket hasn't stayed stuck to the mounting surface on the engine block.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with fresh oil and, if the filter sits upright, fill it about one-third full with oil.
- Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the block, then tighten it about 3/4 of a turn more (follow the instructions printed on the filter). Don't use excessive force.
- Clean the drain hole area, replace the plug gasket, and tighten the plug to about 35-40 N·m (26-30 lb-ft) (verify the exact value against the service manual). Don't overtighten: threads in an aluminum oil pan strip easily.
- Pour in about 3.8-4 L (4.0-4.2 qt) of oil, wait a minute, and check the level with the dipstick. Then add oil in small amounts up to the F (full) mark. Install the filler cap.
- Start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within 1-2 seconds. Inspect the filter and drain plug for leaks.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan, and recheck the level on level ground. Top up if needed. Take the used oil to a recycling collection point.
Common mistakes and warnings
- The 2AZ-FE engine is known for increased oil consumption at high mileage (piston ring sticking) and, in some cases, for cylinder head bolt thread problems. For this reason, check the oil level regularly after the change (every 1,000-2,000 km / 600-1,200 mi). Don't fill oil above the F mark: excess oil can be forced out through the seals and the crankcase ventilation system. Don't reuse the old drain plug gasket.
